Picked up $25 from my credit union yesterday, put them in the car and didn't look at them until tonight. All were wrapped by hand and each one was labeled "pre 82'. Well I had to open every one to make sure. The results:

1 wheat
2 Canada
18 82's
2475 pre 82'

99.8%

Either someone had also tried hoarding and gave up or, well it was 8/8/08 when I got them. Maybe it was just my lucky day.

You're kidding, right?

Great pickup 3 Blue Stars! Looks like they shorted you 4 cents. Were the 82's Copper? Were the Canadians copper? That percentage might be even higher. Most of us count copper Canadians and wheats when calculating our percentages from a sort.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Haven't picked up a scale yet for the 82's. All the canadian were from 64' to 76' and yup I included them in my total %. I've also gotten a side benifit to all this hoarding. When I dump the zinc's the coin machine always credits me an additional 2% to 3%. Receipt says X number of cents, always a couple of nickels and dimes and once gave me credit for a sac. dollar.

Good bank to go back to. A bank that pays you for going there sounds like a good deal.

Sounds like a bank I want to dump at. How many zincers can you put in before the machine goes on Tilt?

While the scale works well there are cheaper options

Just grab a little flat stick and a pencil. Put known coppers on both sides and balance it. Then try a known zinc. The copper side will drop. Then try the 82's and see if they are light (zinc) or heavy (copper).

There is also a ring test. Drop a known copper (pre 82) and a known zinc (post 82) onto tile or the ntable. There is a distinct ring to copper. Mix them up and drop them without looking at the date. When you can tell the differance without looking first drop the 82s and you can seperate copper from zinc.

I'm willing to bet that is what happened. Did you go back and see if they had anymore?

Excellent score.

Were these really Brinks boxes or CWI boxes with holes in the top? Or did they have more red ink on them than the previous ones. My last batch was all CWI, and they don't say Brinks on the boxes.

Definately Brinks boxes as they said Brinks on them. I picked up some more boxes yesterday, and two were the CWI checked boxes, my firsts, one being all new '08 D's. Another first for me. Three boxes yesterday had the holes, but only two had the CWI stamps. CWI #93. Inspected by #5091. March 18, 2008. Same on both. What's the world coming down too....

i would tend to believe that people keep wrapped pennys for a long time based on what i got yesterday. i got $10 in handwrapped pennys and many of the wrappers looked like they had been in a box where ink had spilled, all inked up on one side. many of the shiny 85's 86's and 87's would have been absolutely pristine except for the ink which has soaked thru and encrusted itself on the rims
363 coppers for 36.3 % I include the copper 82's
3 wheats
17 copper canadians, including 7 kings, 39,41,2 42's 47,48,and 52
and here is the clincher, the bank name on some of the wrappers is one that was bought out several years ago.
