To make a claim, please reply to this thread with the type of coin you discovered, and when and where you found it. The more details the better.
This contest is open to circulation strike coins dated 2010, from any nation. A find is allowable even if it was purchased directly at a premium, BUT only circulation strikes count. Proofs, bullion coins, and privately minted coins are not part of this contest.
This contest will run from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2010, forum time.

Thanks again for sponsoring this contest for the upcoming 2010 year.
Since a few of the 2009 coins have not yet been claimed as of this date, can we, for bragging rights, claim them here if found in 2010???
Enjoy your coin searches, everyone. |

Until the computer problems stopped me from searching any at all today, I have been trying very hard to find a 2009 dime. I have been getting more rolls than normal when I can and looking as carefully as I can at each dime that passes through my fingers, but alas, none found yet.

Is it dated 2010 (or the Muslim equivalent (1430 AH)? |

Yeah I was worried the east coast Canadian members would beat me to it.
The only photos i know of are on Ebay You must be logged in to see this link.
Out of the 4 rolls I purchased (paid with dump pennies) I only got 15 of the colourized quarters. 3 out of 3 of the rolls and 6 out of the other.
Coin teller did not know when the 2010 Canadian coins would arrive. |

Thanks a lot PTP but technically it's a 2009 dated coin with a 2010 release date.
It is on the 2010 first finds contest list though.

Ummm...OK??? Why did they wait until 2010 to release 2009 coins officially? That seems different.
Oh well...congrats anyways.
Are the colorized coins something routine for Canadian coins or is it something new? Do they circulate like regular coins or are they immediately hoarded?
Thanks for the info. |

I believe that there are a total of 4 colourized quarters in the "Special Moments" Olympic series, commemorating resent Canadian Olympic medalists.
#1- mens hockey #2-Womens hockey #3-Cindy Klassen (speed skating) #4-Sledge Hockey (parolympic hockey)
I do not think that any of the other 12(?) Olympic quarters came in a colourized version,I could be wrong?
I just decided to collect a roll of each of the colourized quarters for fun, probably trade them off in the future. |

For the record I do not like colourized coins either, with the exception of the enameled 2008 Medal of Bravery Canadian dollar. |

Cindy grew up in my neighborhood. A lot of my friends went to highschool with her. I'd love to have a Canadian coin with MY portrait on it (then again, I suppose I'd have to do something awesome...) |

We've had a few colorized quarters. Yes, they are hoarded. They also wear pretty fast in regular circulation. I believe that the 2004 "Poppy" design (see link) was the first colorized circulation coin in the world. In 2006 they tried again with the "Pink Ribbon".

When I toured the RCM they talked a little about the technology of colorizing circulation coins. The poppy one took a beating for sure and the Mint admits it. However, I still see decent ones in circulation. The Mint made improvements on the Pink Breast Cancer Ribbon Quarter to prevent the color coming off. Both that poppy and the ribbon were placed in the center in a round pattern. As long as the color was on the obverse, the coins could be oriented any way when they were colored - there is no right way up for the colored portion.
The Olympic Moments (as they have been branded) or Bronze, Silver and Gold Medalist coins as they show in the coin collector boards are the first colorized circulation coins that have the color printed in a specific orientation. The Mint is stepping up their capabilities again.
I don't know if Sledge Hockey will be colorized (first I've heard of it) but it is possible.
Of course the mint sells various colorized non-circulation coins at big premiums.
Suggest adding the Colorized (like Junk Woody Found) and no color versions of the Klassen Quarter. I assume both are being issued like the silver and bronze coins. |

You are right jadedragon the Sledge Hockey quarter is not part of the series, just the three quarters.
No word from the coin ladies at the banks I visit as to when the regular 2010 coinage will arrive.
Any fellow Canadians forum members know? I'm assuming it will be when the Olympic Loonie is released Feb 12th ?

I believe that the RCM was represented at the 2010 FUN Show. I know I saw some gorgeous colorized non-circulation coins for sale and would have loved to have gotten one or two of them as art pieces, but just wasn't able to do so.
Saw non-colorized round (coin???) bullion from European mints as well and fell in love with a few more pieces, but sadly I wasn't able to buy any for my collection. |
