Cobbled together BBA from 5 schools - yet ended with only 1/2 an extra credit from a speed reading course - so zero waste:) Then moved on to some Labor Law Courses and lots of other classes. I really enjoy reading too, though I do most of that online now. |

I dropped out of college 8 years ago or so before I had even made it two years. Alot had to do with being burned out and the rest was i simply didnt know what i wanted to do with my life. i just wasnt ready to settle for something subpar to spend 40-50 years at. I now work at a gas station making a crap wages. Would i go back and change a thing? highly doubtful. It is the path i took that has made me who i am today. I know I am a smart individual I am constantly learning, asking questions, and researching new things. I dont need a degree to tell me i am smart and knowledgable. On the flip side i would make alot better wage if i had finsihed a degree. i also may just be miserable in a job i hate. Money can buy alot but nothing is worse than being stuck day in and day out in something you despise. Since quitting I have traveled. Not as much as i would like but enough. i have had chances to learn things. I am 100% self reliant. I can tear a car apart, build a house from the ground up, garden, etc.
A degree is no measure of intelligence. There are smart people and not so smart people. Some took different paths than others and some had more resources earlier in life. That being said i may go back and get a degree soon. Something to do with marine life or such. i think i could easily spend the rest of my life near or on the sea and be grateful for every moment. But it has taken me 29 years or so to figure that out. i also want to start flipping houses. i can do all the work and love to build. The thing is this is the first time in 10 years that I have actually been motivated to better myself and i will.
Intelligence + motivation=watch out world.
What i am saying is no matter your education. or even how smart you think you are. In the end the world is yours to grab. Work hard and go after your goals. Bounce back up when your down, dust yourself off and go kick ass.
This board itself has a higher level of intelligence than other boards i post on. Why? We discuss PM's, the econmy, etc. We all are smarter than your average Americans because we actually care about these things. we care and prepare on some level atleast for IF bad things happen. if SHTF whats the guy with a Masters Degree and all his money tied up in stocks gonna do?
*I just want to note that I think Degrees can be great tools. I am not knocking anyone who has one rather i say Bravo! Its a great accomplishment. Just saying there are smart people both with and without. Anyway sorry for the rant.

Jorge Bush has an MBA from Yale..... I think that reinforces your point.
I work with 50 some very highly educated lawyers, and I wouldn't trust most of them (with a few extraordinary exceptions)to change a lightbulb or cut my grass...

I agree that there are many successful people who dropped out of school, as well as many more who have degrees but know next to nothing (look at all the highly-educated people on Wall Street and Pennsylvania Avenue who have recently done a bang-up job...)
I think a lot depends on what you study. I'm in a dual-major program for Mechanical Engineering and Management. With a degree in mechanical engineering, I can work on anything from cars and HVAC systems, to nuclear power plants and the space station. I'm confident that I can find a job, or make my own job, no matter what kind of SHTF situation rolls around. If I was only getting a degree in management, I wouldn't have that level of confidence. Mechanical engineering is extremely broad and extremely practical. Management is useful in an organized world, but if all structure collapses, it isn't nearly as valuable as understanding 'what makes stuff work.'
One of my favorite quotes:
"This is not the age of pamphleteers. It is the age of engineers. The spark-gap is mightier than the pen. Democracy will not be salvaged by men who talk fluently, debate forcefully and quote aptly." -Lancelot Hogben |

Education is like anything else, what you make of it is up to you. In High School I graduated 495th out of 500. 24 Years later, I graduated from College at the top of my class with a 3.92 GPA. It's amazing what you can accomplish when you WANT to do what you're doing. To the young guys I would say, Find something you like to do, be it college or not, then apply yourself to learning to do it the best you can. In todays world of mediocrity, you'll rise quickly. Remember, education works from the outside in, determination and motivation, work from the inside out! |
Are you throwing that out? |

Sometimes you need to have that piece of paper (they don't use sheepskin any more, right?) before you're allowed to go on the ride. It took me about 25 years, but my B.S. (Go Nittany Lions!) finally came in mighty handy when I just happened to be at the right place a the right time. Of course the 7 1/2 years it took to finally graduate and the various economic positions I held until my Degree came up as a job requirement also added a bit to my education. There's lot's of ways to gain knowledge and wisdom, but you got to put in the time and $'s if you want it in writing with fancy gold colored seals. |

The sad part is in our world today the paper that shows you have the education means more than knowing what you are talking about. |
Awake, O kings of the earth! Come ye, O, come ye, with your gold and your silver, to the help of my people, to the house of the daughters of Zion, to the help of the people of the God of this Land even Jesus Christ. |

Education does not equal intelligence.
Intelligence does not always come from formal Education.
I knew a girl that had her Masters plus 30, had not one bit of common sense. She did things that would make you just shake your head. |

Education is a wonderful thing. It will serve you well. It travels well with you. It is lightweight. The government cannot take it away from you once you have it.
Somehow I managed to get a BS in Accounting magna cum laude.. or was it persona non grata? I can't remember.. it was so long ago.

And I'm not surprised one bit. I got a master's degree in music in 1998; my final college loan payment is coming up this March! Only 12 years of payments! |

Education is what you make out of it. Most places will hand you a degree if you do just the bare minimum to get by. I did an MBA in Finance and was amazed at some of the people in my classes that were lazy, useless, and didn’t want to work. For those people I had no use for because I wanted to surround myself with those who want to achieve. Trust me, doing that pays off. Just having a degree doesn’t. |

Got a B.S. in Physics, but lost all interest in the subject, and fell back on what I knew best, which was computers - now working in IT for a software company. |
