Stormy today so grabbed another box from storage and cracked it open. Found 2 more buffalos- 1 dateless and 1 1934. Also found 1 lonely war nickel.

The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities.

$600 sorted and only found 2 wars and 1 buffalo. So that's 0.5/box.
Also keeping all pre-1960's which is about a 1% yield.

Have sorted a total of 10 nickel boxes (20,000 coins) this year.
Went back and re-sorted all pre 1960 keepers (approx 1%) and discovered- 1 1950 D, 1 1942 D, 6 1939 dateless, and 19 S's.
I guess those 2 D mints are pretty rare and have found as many buffalos as 1939's.
In the process of stockpiling a few hundred boxes for the future so will only pluck a few to sort until the stock is full and easy to replace as sorted.

Cool find on the 1950-D jonflyfish, I am pretty sure your one of the few members to ever find THE key date of the series.

Thanks Robber Baron. Was a bit surprised myself since I wasn't initially paying any attention to any key dates, just setting all pre 1960 coins aside. So when I came across the 1950D I had to check and re-check, but the coin is quite nice and clean and the "D" is clear as can be. Overall, I'm pretty surprised not many people are sorting nickels. The buffalos and WN's are more fun to find than wheat pennies and given the much proportionally smaller circulation base than other coins, I can imagine this Rodney Dangerfield coin will get its respect the day the mint announces a composition change.

Also, pre 1960 coins are far fewer(approx 1%)than most people assume IMO. The time to hoard is now because when "that" day comes, the shortage will come swiftly. I can see the banks turning most people away when they go racing to the tellers. The banks just don't have a lot of nickels on hand and I can already hear "the few that we have are for our commercial business customers." So, I suspect that those who say they'll hoard 'em when the time comes will have a very difficult time finding them readily available.

2 more boxes today- skunks! The herd has run for the hills! 0 buffalos, 0 WN's, 36 pre 1960, and only 1 S mint.
Hard to accept such dismal results. Will try to sneak 1 more box in tonight and see what happens.

Well 1 more box turned into 3 more boxes- LOL. Wanted to lasso a WN or buffalo today. Didn't happen...5 boxes full of skunks.
Last 3 boxes added 63 pre 1960's (99 for the day)of which only 3 were S mints(4 today)- ouch! Guess will have to ramp up the sorting for a fierce hunt.

What a way to start off the day- 1 early box and no buffalos nor WN's. 19 pre 1960's and 1 S mint.
Hmpf...7 straight skunks...Will go get fresh boxes today and reload the black powder. Sounds like war and smells like buffalo!
