| Guess this doesn't really count, but my Dad offhandedly mentioned to me the other day that he filled out a penny book when he was a kid. He gave them to me, and the oldest penny in there was an 1858! There was also a 1909 vdb...no S though. Any other valuable pennies I should look for? |

Ooof-
Most D's and S's before 1930 were relatively low mintages compared to the unmarked Philly mint. Besides those these are the jewels:
1909-S vdb (the crown jewel) 1909-S no vdb 1914-D 1922 plain (defective D) 1931-S 1955 double die obverse- (so obvious it will leap up and slap you on the side of the head) 1972 double die obverse (not as obvious as a 1955)
There are other doubles, and other rarities but you'll want to consult a coin guide.
Mint errors are always desirable. Look up a coin collectors page and learn what a 'cud' is. Horgad has found some. I found one. Error collectors pay good money for these. Also, if you find an unplated cent, same thing. |

| I'm nearly done hand sorting my very first lot of pennies (10 boxes of $25) and last night found an indian head in the eighth box, from 1899. Also found a zinc that has a four leaf clover carved beside lincoln's head, someone was nice to throw that in there. :) |

My wife found a 1904 Indian head in her change couple days ago. Still pretty good shape. Myself a 1940 wheat. Hey Art Tatum you got your grey star ie; posts. |

| A coworker today handed me a 1903 Indian cent. I think he found it in '07, though. Now I'm in the Indian Head Club too! (This is now the oldest coin I've got, breaking my previous oldest find by 16 years.) |

| Still haven't found my first Indian of the year yet either. But I did find something even tougher in a roll last night.. a 1944-D mercury dime! These are even harder to find in a penny roll than Indian pennies. I believe this is the oldest dime found in a penny roll this year. |

My oldest is an 1890 Indian now. I am going to be lucky to beat that again this year, but I will try. |

| How many coins are you sorting per week to find indian heads? Are you the guys who are sorting multiple boxes per week? My volume for pennies is very low (dollars per week) Even so I find a Wheat every couple dollars. The oldest thus far is mid 1930's. |

I caught my first one in a $25 box, sorted by hand. It was my second box.
My second was after about 60 boxes. So at that rate, I'm getting one every 60 boxes. |

I average about 1 in 100,000 or 1 in 40 boxes which right now is about 1 every 2 weeks for me. Others have had less luck. I'm in the midwest. |

Got $50 CWR from one bank this week. Included an interesting old roll, nothing newer than 1971. Many shiny coins, at least on the faces of the coins, the edges where it touched the paper, had the dark color. This roll had 5 wheat pennies, oldest being 1944. Immagaine sorting for wheats in 1971 and getting 5% wheats. Obviously coins from some old stash. Heres the really good news, my son was sorting, feeding the machine, and I looked down and pointed, Sure enough "he" found a 1907 Indian in great condition. We quickly put it in a flip, and I gave it to him. He loved it. Happy Sorting. |
