Hello everyone. I am new here and have a question about starting out collecting pre-1982 copper pennies. How can i start out on a small scale like $5.00 at a time. What r the do's and donts with dealing with the banks? What r some of the mistakes others have made? I was thinking about having a checking at one bank and a savings in another bank. Get $5.00 dollars a day from my checking and deposit the zinc pennies into the other bank in to my savings. Any info please! Thanks!!!

Welcome. At $5.00 a day you should not have any trouble with your banks. But, better yet, rather than driving by each day just to pick up five dollars, why not just get a box of pennies every week. One box is $25.00. You do want your dump bank to be separate and apart from your pick up bank. There may come a time when you get tired of rolling all those pennies for deposit. I suggest looking for a bank with a free coin counting service and dumping your unrolled zincs there.

Rich is a little whiskey to drink and some food to eat and a roof over your head and a fish pole and a boat and a gun and a dollar for a box of shells. Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark

Be really nice to you teller, and tell them what you are doing, and some times they go out of there way to help you, and might even weight out the pennies so you get the boxes with the highest copper percent.

A couple of the guys here have built those homeMade sorters. Some of us bought the Wei-Ya comparitors and didn't quite get one built. Every one of the guys that successfully built a homemade unit ended up buying a Ryedale. You don't have to buy the top of the line. You can get a great model for $379. If you want to go even cheaper, you can get a hand fed unit even less.. only $199. And he even offers an upgrade program if you want to start at the bottom and upgrade to a fancier machine later. If you want to get the cheapest sorter out there don't try all that frustrating electronic stuff which may or may not work. Get a pencil, a popsicle stick and a thumbtack. You can make your own sorter that way very cheaply and you won't even have to plug it in and use up a bunch of expensive electricity to run it. Sure, it is kind of slow.. but speed has it's price.

Get a Ryedale.. Quality, speed, reliability.. all at a very reasonable price.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

If you are only doing $5 per day, you should be able to spend that without having to find a dump bank

OK, I am thinking that it would be too hard to build my own machine using a ELECTRONIC COIN COMPARATOR like this one:You must be logged in to see this link. so I was wondering about this: HAND FED SYSTEM No Model Number $199
Includes Penny or Nickel Chute (plastic injection parts) Base Plate and Discriminator, Can
be upgraded later to an APPRENTICE for additional cost of $200 for feeder or $250 for
feeder plus additional chute(penny or nickel) and speed control. Just send back for
factory retrofitting. You could also develop your own feed system if you are on a budget.
Includes power supply, pre-wired for the discriminator. I will include the stainless bracket
and funnel for model as shown, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR FUNNEL ATTACHMENT AND
FINAL ASSEMBLY. SOMEWHAT INTERACTIVE BUT ALLOWS THE USER SOME OPTIONS ON
FEEDING. Does not include counter, feed hopper, or electric switch. Shipping is $20 in US
$25 into Canada.
and if it would suit my needs which is separate copper from zinc. Are there a lot of problems with this model as far as the separating??? does this model tend to break fast??? Or Should I just get to busy sorting by eye???? I cant afford the expensive model and I don't have a lot of time to waste but I will go through those pennies by eye if I have to.

Miami, you can sort with a $12 digital scale about as fast as with that hand fed electronic gizmo. For that matter you can sort for free using a popsicle stick balance as mentioned by HCBTT. Save your pennies (I mean the zincs!) and get the real thing. You'll be glad you did.

A penny sorted is a penny earned!

Welcome to the forum. I think you are on the right track as far as two bank accounts, one for supply and one for dumping zincs. Do what you can afford. If you are going to move up to large quantities, then to stay on the good side of banks be sure to call or ask ahead. Dont drop in and expect them to give you $50 worth of pennies as they only order a fixed amount per week, mainly for businesses that do cash transactions. If you have a good relationship with the head teller, then ask them to set up a weekly order for you if you start doing boxes. Good luck!

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.
