Post your oldest coin found in 2008 and approximate value. If you find one older later on, then post it.
So far 1925 Philadelphia mint worth about 40 cents.

1883 Indian Head penny. Worth about $3.00.
Earlier this year I hit a "copper vein" that yielded nothing but wheatears and Indian Heads. The newest penny was 1943. Most were from the teens and twenties. The bank had a couple rolls like this. Finding these older pennies allowed me to complete my Lincoln collection, sans the 1909-s vdb. I just about had a heart attack when I opened that first roll. It was faded and falling apart. Inside was treasure, including three regular 1909 vdb's! These coins looked like they hadn't seen the light of day since 1943. A lot of AU's and XF's.
I haven't even come close to finding anything as good since that day. |

For 2007: 1886 Indian. Found two 1909 VDB, one in awesome shape.....wish they were S-VDB. Lots of Pre-War Wheats with 20 Million to 50 Million Mintages.....remember, these are 10X-30X as rare as the Common Post War Wheats. That is the power of having Ryedale Automation and sorting Millions of Pennies per year! |

| My old finds were 1919d, 1921s, 1920s, aslong with an 1907 , 1890 cents |
I love those fed boxes and hoard up pre 64 silver coins such as rolls of 64 half dollers. Maybe copper will be very expensive such as silver is. |

Strange find during sorting:
I got a box last week and while I was sorting, I found about 25 wheats (above average). The strange part was 90% looked exactly the same condition speaking with a little rust but still had a good luster to it. Interesting being in a box, not a individual wrapped rolls.
Oldest find: 1916 in G-$0.35 |

| 1919 wheat. I can't remember the mint mark, but it's in pretty poor condition. |

I found a 1908 Indian this morning. Surely I will beat that by the end of 2008...*knock on wood*.
Edit: 1903 Indian is my oldest now in 2008. |

| So far the oldest cent is a 1935 Philly issue worth 10 cents. A long way to go in 2008 to find an older one, possibly my first Indian Head cent?? |

| The oldest I've found was a 1906 Indian. Before anyone gets excited over the find, it looks like it's been buried underground for the last 100 years. Quite crusty and pitted, but, hey, we all have our trophies of one type or another. Value < $0.01. Value to me--priceless. |
Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply. |

It hurts to know that 1972 doubles and other rare Memorials are sneaking through, but there's no way to check them all if you are doing high volume. |

| I am doing 26+ boxes a week using a a single pass on an Apprentice and looking at the face of every single copper penny. Granted I miss any zinc errors, most non-eye visible errors, and most obverse side errors, but I manage to get both my hand-sorting fix and keep up a good volume at the same time. |

| What's your technique? Do you have a flip board or some such? |

Not really much secret to it. I spend about 10 minutes running a box through the Ryedale with a zinc target penny which pulls out the majority of the zincs and then I spend about 10 minutes hand-sorting the 700 or so coppers that came out of the box.
I have a penny catcher build into one side of my table that leads to a box on the floor. So the left hand slides pennies into the catcher (usually several at a time) while the right hand flips pennies. Other than that I got a good strong light, a scale (for unreadable pennies), a loop, and jars for sorting any pennies that do not go into the penny catcher.
Also if you use this technique don't forget to check your zinc pile. It only takes a minute to do a slow pour from one bucket to another while looking for "mistakes". The "mistakes" (although rare) tend to be the best pennies. |

My previous posts were for 2007. My oldest coin found so far this year 2008? A 1919 wheat penny.
But the year's still young, and I'm sure I'll find older. |
