I use two of the Forums in Indy for returns and none of them for pickups. Sounds like it must be somebody else that the tellers are talking about. Knowing that you are dumping way up in Avon makes me about 99.9% sure that we are not the only two penny hoarders in Indy.

So far, I have never had any problems getting back anybody's dump boxes. The worst boxes that I had were a couple that were 50% plus 2007s. Brinks seems to occassionaly dump bags of new UNC pennies in with the usual old mix. It makes for some pretty light boxes. I'd much rather toss aside a 100% new UNC penny box than waste my time sorting a box that is 10-15% copper ...

I've built my entire hoard on 15 percent, hand sorted, customer wrapped rolls. All of the boxes locally are unc 07's. If I break 20 percent I've had a really good day. But, I've been steadly plugging away my 10-15 percent for over a year now. Always adding some every week.

Sort Report 11-26-07

Collected US last week, but only sorted the quarterly BIG Canadian lode for the week.

CANADIAN Copper:
Amount Sorted = $1525 FV (61 "boxes")
Copper Hoarded = $610 FV (24.4 "boxes")
Copper % = 40% (typical for SW Ontario is 40%)
Composition: 100% "Penny Drive" Collection (Loose Coin)
Added to Canadian Hoard = 370 lbs (CAN Cu total = 2370 lbs)
Canadian Cu = 2370 lbs
US Cu = 2802 lbs
Total Cu = 5172 lbs

Ryedale Machine(s) Total Sorted: 4,220,000 since Mar 2007.

Hoard Code has been updated to reflect the above additions.

Interesting Comments on Canadian Hoarding: In less than 10 months, I've experienced a currency exchange rate swing of over 20%.....over that time period, it now costs 20% more in USD$ to hoard anything Canadian. Additionally, due to the many weight variations of the Canadian Copper Penny, on a "Weighted Average Basis" (pun intended) it takes about 165 pennies to make a pound of Canadian Copper....(while the US is just 148 per pound). Let's assume a current exchange rate of $1.00 CND = $1.05 USD...... 1.05 X 165 = $1.74 USD per pound of Copper Coins. That makes current Canadian Copper Hoarding about an 18% premium over US Copper Hoarding.....this was not a big issue when the exchange rate was $1.20 CND = $1 USD....but now that parity has been crossed and will likely continue to widen.....

At the same time, over the past year, I have enjoyed a 20% exchange rate "profit" on all of my Canadian Hoard...and even on the Float of the return Steel/Cu-Ni/Zinc that I have held.

These are the interesting aspects for a US Hoarder chasing both Canadian Cu & Ni as well as US Cu.....while having to use the rapidly depreciating USD currency.

Ditto. I haven't broken 20% since I started sorting almost a year ago. Most of the time it's between 10%-15%, all hand sorted. I've almost gotten to the point where I'm going to buy the rolls and leave them unsorted. I've been buying more nickels lately & it's been becoming more & more of a pleasure not having to sort them. I also think holding onto zinc might not be a bad idea.

IF I didn't sort off the zinc and return it I would quickly run out of both capital and storage space. My boxes are running about 20-21%. I don't want to have 80$ of my capital tied up in zinc. The faster I can sort off the zinc and return it, the more unsorted boxes I can get.

Buying Report for yesterday:
Wells Fargo - Pinole
8 Boxes BWR pennies

Loomis Coin Drop at work:
8 BWR pennies
5 Shiny new rolls nickels
5 Shiny new rolls dimes
8 Shiny new rolls Utah quarters

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

I've processed over 2.5 Million Pennies and have only found 3 Indians.....there may be some that are being kept in my "Copper Keep" pass, but my experience is this is not the case....they have just enough Tin to no be accepted as "Copper"....so I should be catching them in my "Zinc Resorts".....

I guess they are just about a 1 in a million chance around my parts.

It is exciting to find these things still in general circulation.

By the way.....I just crossed the 25% point on my way to my goal of 10 TONS of COPPER. I'm over 2.5 Tons now and with luck may hit 3 tons before end of 2007.

Hoard til' yer poor!!!

"Man, I'm still waiting to find one."

Every time that I have seen one I have to do a double take. The first thought that passes through my mind when I glimpse one "What kind of foreign coin is this?"

I was averaging 1 every 50,000 pennies, but I am pretty sure that my average has dropped considerably because of a long dry spell. I can't remember for sure how many I have found without going home and counting them. I think that it is 7 and I have sorted about 500,000 pennies. So maybe 1 in 71,500 now.

"I actually dreamed that I found one"

When I close my eyes at night, I see pennies flying across my sorting table into the coin funnel.

"Sad huh?"

Maybe you should ask for one for Christmas...it would probably only cost Santa about $1.25.

Realistically, I can't afford to do it with all my bought cent rolls, either. But I don't sort on the same level as you do(unfortunately). I think a little diversification in zinc might be a good idea, just in case.

Awesome find, Horgad. So far the Indian Head quest has been like the Holy Grail of sorting for me.

Oh, I believe in a a little diversification in zinc also.. I have a few boxes of 2007 pennies set aside. I figure if I am going to hoard a little zinc it might as well be BU.

wow two entries in a row
i got 20 bank wrapped rolls today
276 copper for 27.6% including 8 wheats. i did not get an indian head but i came as close as you can: a 1909 lincoln vdb in au. my dad was a coin collector, and over the last 10 years or so we have auctioned off most of his coins a little at a time. About 3 years ago i auctioned off a roll of 1909 vdb linc's, some of those were AU and am just wondering if the coin i got today was part of that roll. there is no way i can tell but i would think if that roll was released into circulation the odds would be pretty good that is WAS from that roll. the auction was about 75 miles from where i got the penny.
