METHOD 1) Use a leather palmed work glove (this is mandatory not optional), hold roll in left hand, cut edge with utility knife, bend open roll over your bucket ....like cracking an egg open.
METHOD 2) This one if really fun - my little boy loves doing this. Get an air copmressor, attach hose and a blow-off-gun....most have a trigger or button. On the blow off gun, there is usually a nozzle or tip....get a piece of rubber fuel line hose about 3 inches long and press onto the end of the gun. Hold roll in left hand...fairly securely....press rubber hose agains end of roll firlmy....aim into bucket (MANDATORY), pull trigger...coins SHOOT OUT - LIKE A GUN! My best results are at higher PSI (80+) and very short burst from gun. This applies about 30 pounds of force to the coins....don't know velocity ....but appears to be pretty darn fast...they nearly explode out of the end of the roll.
The extra material at end of roll just gets wadded up against the rubber hose and makes a nice seal.
Sometimes, the plastic shrink end is too tight and all that happens is the side of the roll gets burst open...sometimes this is enough to shake the pennies out.
Due to velocity...put a towel in bucket, until enough coins get in there...otherwise the "Shot" pennies will bounce out due to velocity.
NEXT STEP: Create and AUTOMATED MACHINE TO DO THIS.

Here is what I could find. This one looks the best but not cheap. Much less than the $50 emergency room co-pay at my local Kaiser Hosp.

Most of the time I just take an old butter knife and wack the blade on the center of the roll. It does not cut the roll just minutely damages the paper. Now just bend the roll and it pops open where struck. |
