20 rolls today , all bankwrapped: 255 copper for 25.5 %, including 5 wheats 45 1982's 2 copper canadian my average was slightly lower today. Hopefully the "vein in Maine" doesnt dry up anytime soon. i have to make an emendation to my previous entry: in the handwrapped rolls i got 2 days ago, i got 1 dime. how in the world does a dime get mistaken for a penny? |

Maybe they are shipping some of my pennies to Maine. I get dimes all the time.. I consider it a nice bonus. The dimes get in there when lower end coin counters have a dime drop in the penny tube. This is not just a phenomenon of low end counters though. I have gotten plenty of dimes in bank wrapped rolls.. especially those plastic shrink wrap rolls known as Brinks wrap or coin condom rolls.

Results for Week Ending Sunday 19 Aug 07:
Please note, I did not sort last week....but still acquired pennies....so, this was a 2X week. I set a new Personal Record for quantity sorted in one weekend!!!
Total Pennies Sorted: $1575 FV (equiv to 63 "boxes")
20% were Customer Rolls/Loose, 80% were Bank Boxes. Note: I got the same Cu% for both types....
Total US Copper added to Hoard: $475 FV. Copper Percentage: 30% (typical for S.E. Michigan). Total Copper Added to Hoard: 315 Lbs!!!!
I've updated my Hoard Code to reflect the above addition.
My Ryedale Machines have the following total coin counts: Coin Artist 2,485,000 since Mar 07. Coin Apprentice: 228,000 since Aug 07. --------------------------------------- Total Sorted 2,713,000
Side Note: "Wheat" Search Results. This is the first time I've ever searched for "Wheats".....I searched 130 Lbs of concentrated copper (about $195 FV) and found 234 Wheats = 1.2% Wheat in the Coppers....or 0.36% Wheat Rate including the Zincs. That is 9 Wheat Pennies per $25 Zn/Cu Mix....or 30 Wheats per $25 of Cu Concentrate. I have not reviewed the coins for any specific dates...yet.

I stopped counting for sorting percentages as always seem to be about 20% plus or minus 5% or so. But on Friday I went thru 20 penny rolls and found a 1895 indian head penny. I have been sorting out copper since 1982 and before that I was sorting out wheats from memorials since 1959. Not on the scale that many of you do tho. Never found an indian before, but have seen some posts here that others have.
Its maybe VG-F condition so not worth much, but I was almost in denial when I saw it. I showed my wife... of course not much interest, but she never even saw one before. Anyway, leads me to believe that there are people out there that are still taking that old penny jar to the bank for cash... even grandpa's old jar. |

When I get a dime in a professionally wrapped roll it is almost always or always bent. My guess is that if a dime is bent just right it is percieved by the machine to have the same thickness as a penny and more likely to be mistaken for a penny, but I am just guessing.
Also the coin counter at my Credit Union coints about 2 in 10,000 zinc pennies as dimes. Talk about a small bonus...

Great percentages, Snappy! Were those bags from Wells Fargo? I will have to see if they can order me loose bags. It would save some time if I didn't have to liberate the pennies from the rolls.

I decided to try sorting through rolls of pennies from the bank--what fun! I decided to start with 10 rolls. Out of 500 pennies, I found: 170 copper 2 wheats 2 Canadian 1 U.S. cent with two tails I'm hooked!

Pennylane, Look at the edge of the Two Tails penny. I got one of these a year or so ago, and it turned out to be a magicians coin, It was two Lincoln heads, somehow glued back to back. Interesting they were from the San Fransisco mint. 1970 S I thought I had struck gold with that one till I learned more. Oh well it was fun.

My Wells Fargo won't even order for me. They may still be really upset me to the point of seeing yellowed about that weekend I rolled up 2600 rolls of zinc and took them in. I love their hours though.. they are open until 6 on Saturday!
All my other banks ever get is boxes.. I never get them loose in the bag.

Yeah, they have really convenient hours. I think they are open till 7 on Friday and 6 on weekdays. Most of my other banks are open till 1 on Saturday except my dump bank which is open till 2 on Saturday. This makes Saturday a great day to go on my bank runs and gather coins.

Penny Lane,
Welcome to the forum. Got to like a gal that understands the coin play, constitution and a Ron Paul fan to boot! Very Welcome!
I have a lot of experience with the Ryedale machines...I've hoarder over 2 tons in 5 months. Ryedale currently has a great machine for about $300. It is worth every penny - nice equipment. It is really the only way to turn hoarding into a pratical vehicle for investment. A typical Ryedale machine can process about 6 or 7 $25 bank boxes per hour. Get one right away - you will be very happy you did. Hand sorting is just for fun, or if you are on a limited budget and can't/don't want to plow serious money into a hoard.
Next step is to join every credit union in your area. Try to talk to the "Central Teller" or "Coin Teller"....hope they have a machine that takes customers change.....if so, try to buy the bags of customer turn in pennies every week....otherwise, place an order for coins at these banks/credit unions. Pick another credit union that takes in coins via their machine.....use them as your Zinc Dumster.... You will probably get about 25% copper and 75% zinc...you have to rid the zinc, unless you hoard that as awell....but that is way expensive.
Read everything you can here and you will be an expert in no time.
A nice goal is about $250 - $500 face value per week....not too much work....you will be putting away over $100 per week in copper, so be prepared to do some saving....or, just go a little slower.
Until Later.....

5 Boxes of pennies from US Bank
3613 copper 28.90% 43 canada 16 wheats, a 1958-D is silver in color. Looks like it was zinc or nickel plated. I highly doubt it is silver as it would have been plucked from circulation back in 1958. |

"a 1958-D is silver in color. Looks like it was zinc or nickel plated. I highly doubt it is silver as it would have been plucked from circulation back in 1958."
Most likely it is a novelty item that was plated after it left the mint for either a promotion or for use in jewelry. There was a company making bracelets and such out of silver plated pennies.
I ran into a penny like the one you describe. Though I can't remember the year of the one that I found off of the top of my head, I did some research and concluded it had come off a bracelet that was popular during that time.
Also to confirm its a "worthless" novelty, try to check for plating defects or plating wear or loss of detail that would confirm that is after mint plating.
For it to be a mint error (not likely), it would have had to be struck on the wrong coin blank. An old Zinc plated steel penny blank would be a very remote possibility...use a magnet if it sticks then you a true rarity. |

There are no holes or solder marks on it as if found off a piece of jewelry. The only odd part other than the silver color is that the edge of the coin at 4 o'clock is pitch black. Maybe this is where the tool working was done if it was on a piece of jewelry at one time? |
