I like the idea of creating a penny shortage and selling our zinc for a premium. I am trying to do my part to create that shortage, but there don't seem to be enough of us.
Actually, you can use your dump bank as both a supplier and a dump bank if you time it right. Find out what their shipment schedule is like and time your visits to coincide with their shipments. You go down the day before and buy all the bags they have of unsorted pennies and then dump all your zinc to get your capital back. They ship out your huge load the next day. You go down a week later and repeat the process. This is much more efficient as you are only making one trip to both dump and acquire your penny stock. There is a big added advantage to getting them loose in the bags like that too. Think of all the time you save by not having to break them out of the rolls. I used to worry about that really upset me to the point of seeing yellowing in my own pool thing too, but timing things like this has worked really well for me, and it is so much more convenient. Plus the coin lady at my dump bank is really nice to me. She is ordering me a nice new box of the new dollars that are being released next week.

I pick up my raw pennies at 2 different banks and then dump the zincs at my credit union with free coin counting machines. That's the only part of this whole business I detest - picking up boxes of pennies from the banks. In answer to the teller's questions about why in the world I want so many pennies I tell them my kids sort through them looking for wheats. It's still a drag to carry all those boxes out to the car, enduring curious stares along the way. I wish I could get an armored car to deliver coins directly to my house.
These posts on this board make me realize how important it is not to have too many penny hoarders in your area. Percentages could go way down if there were more than a few in each area. |

When they ask me what I want so many pennies for I just tell them I am a collector and like to go through them. I use those cloth bags with handles on them (I think they might be the same ones folks use for groceries) I can put 2 or 3 boxes in each one so I am balanced if I am picking up 4 or 6 boxes. They are also very useful if the bank has loose customer rolls with no boxes. This way nobody sees me carrying those boxes of pennies. Of course when I pick up larger quantities (like 24 boxes) I just stack them up on my cart and wheel them out.. much easier on the back.
Pretty sure I am the only serious penny hoarder in my neighborhood. I know I am the only guy within 40 miles that has a Ryedale machine. The guy that lives 40 miles away only bought his after he saw my machine in operation. I think if there were other serious hoarders in my neighborhood I would get occasional groups of rolls of solid zinc cents and that has never happened, even though I pick up from more than 10 banks.

$850 pennies $355 copper rest zinc.
~41 % not to bad I guess.
I am happy with the new machine It does have to be cleaned and lubed often to reduce jams. WD40 on a Qtip to lube/clean the coin slide helped a lot. The packing materal was old penny rolls!!!! now I have to find a place to dump them (don't want everyone to know I have excess amounts of coins at my house)
Snappy - go to the hardware store and buy a $3 can of silicone lubricant spray for the coin chute. I use paper towels, a small knife and mineral sprits to clean the coin feed hopper and wheel every 50,00 - 100,000 coins. I've processed over 2.3 Million coins in 5 months (about 15,000 lbs of coins) and the machine runs like a Rolex. I also lubricate the steel rollers that eject the coins from the feed hopper. I often go will go 50k - 100k without a jam. |

What kind of cart do you have? The bank teller told me I should get a dolly. |

It is a flat platform cart with a fold down handle. Fits nicely in the trunk. The handle just lifts up and snaps into place. I went looking for this type of cart after I saw them using one in one of my banks to bring my penny shipment out. Couldn't find one in any of the local hardware stores so I went on ebay and found some right away. I did a best offer on it and they accepted my price. I think it was about $40-45. I recommend getting the heavier duty model like mine.. it is rated for 660 pounds. They make a smaller model that is rated for 330 pounds but it has a smaller platform and is less sturdy. A standard shipment for me is 24 boxes which weighs about 400 pounds. Of course it is great for hauling in 12-16 bags of zinc at a time too. It is one of the best investments I have made in my penny operation. Certainly the cheapest. Though I have to say my Ryedale machine and my Glory Wrappers and counters were pretty good investments also. Now if I could only find a Rollcracker 1000 cheap.

Sorting report for this week. Just finished $575 Face
$200 Brinks boxes (bank wrapped) $375 Loose and CWR
Weighed copper when done.......115.5 lbs
I don't sort off the Canadian or wheats at this time, so my rough estimate is still right around 30% copper.
Big pile of zinc to return. Probably have to get another zinc dumpster this week.
Used 3 machines to sort. My Coin Artist, My Apprentice, and C140cessna's Apprentice. Dont tell him. Im sending it out this week, it needed a little durability test anyway.

8-9-07 $30.00 513 copper 1 dime 2 wheat 1 Canada 17.10 %
8-10-07 $10.00 116 copper 3 wheat 1 Canada 11.60 %
Did a check and my percentage for all sorting is 16.921 percent. This does not include all of the 07's I've been getting. I get about twice as many 07's as I do mixed rolls. Once again though, more than I had before.

You have the best attitude MormonMetal, "more than I had before" that is how we all think and feel even when the percentages don't go our way. Keep on hording and I hope your percentages increase with each month.
I should have chosen "Cut-n-Paste" as a forum name, since that is what I do, mostly. |

This hobby takes place of my previous hobby, drinking. The 23rd of this month will actually make one year of being sober for me. I feel better, have more money, and have a lot more fun. The wife still gets just about as mad when I bring home a box of pennies as she did when I'd brink home a 12-pack, but you can win on everything. |

Great percentage! Looks like you are the winner for the week. Now you will have to go see if the other bank in town has $5 worth of pennies for you. I can just imagine if I pulled up to the drive up window and asked for 24 boxes..

I couldn't agree more. I try to preach it to people, I ask them to show me their pennies and they usually say "Don't waste your time, you can have 'em for Christ's sake, have fun". |

i got 10 rolls at the bank yesterday , all hand wrapped: 151 copper for 30.2%.. no wheats 8 1982's 4 canadian. i always think when i get hand wrapped rolls that i may strike a "vein".. something kinda in the same "vein" (pun intended) as what snappy got the other day.. not this time for me, however. congrats, snappy, thats quite a strike. almost 10% wheat is quite impressive.. that penny jar they unloaded must have been very dusty. |

Where I come from getting 30% IS striking a "vein" I think we should all adopt the attitude MormanMetal has when we get a low percentage. Whatever percentage we get it is "more than we had before"
