I have hand sorted over 60,000 copper and zinc Lincoln cents. I have only found one amazing error? coin. It is a 1960d Lincoln cent. It is gold in color, and unfortunately has a couple of small scratches on the obverse, but it has exposed a silvery zinc metal underneath. It also has the effects of a broken die. Has anyone ever encountered anything like this, or knows any info. about this I would like to know

I also forgot to mention that it weighs 3.312 grams; and has some slight corrosion on the obverse it is very small but looks like black mold. I have shown it to a couple of coin dealers in my area and no one has any idea at all about it.(one dealer said it was'nt anything special and offered me five bucks for it) There is a silver dollar show coming up in October in my area and ANACS will be there-I might go and see if they can tell me anything. |

Hi Frugi, If a dealer is willing to give you five bucks for a supposedly “not worth much” coin, then it may be worth quite a bit!
The only thing I could find out about a 1960 D was that some had a double strike date, large date over small date and a letter D over a letter D. Sometimes coins are struck from the wrong metal or planchet, though if this were the case the coin would be silver in color, not copper. Sorry I cant tell you more about this coin, just hold onto it, remember when a quarter was stamped on a Sacagawea dollar? This might be an unknown error coin worth a good buck! |

Sorry for reviving old threads here, but I'm new and they are all new to me! Anything ever come of that coin? Just wondering.
Deal
I'm so sick over pennies....I frequently trade a dime or two for the whole "take-a-penny" container if sufficient coppers exist. That will get you some odd looks. |

I've run across about half dozen gold plated pennies in the last year. I've had plating companies offer to gold plate pennies for my restaurant as a marketing gimmick. They really are cheap to have done.
it does strike me as interesting that all the ones I've run across so far are usually fairly old, like pre-1980 (I've been having my cashiers pick out pre 1982 pennies, so they started showing me those golden ones) |

Never did anything with it, never took it to coin show. Put it in the "unusual and possible error coin box" and there it sits along with other possible small fortunes.

It has more than likely been plated after it left the mint.
It should weigh 3.11 grams, so yours is overweight. |

I recently received a "chrome" penny (1959D) which I imagine is the same sort of thing as we are talking about here. It actually looks like a cross between silver and chrome, really shiny but without any tarnish. |
