I've been looking over percentages of Canadian nickels recovered over the past few months, and as others have noticed, the percentage of pure Ni coins has fallen a little. I'm getting generally 18-20% whereas earlier this year I was finding over 22%.
I'm not sure that the hoarding and the ARP have had a marked effect. I think the main drop is the large number of 2007 nickels humped into the system. If you took the numbers above and added about 12% new steel coins, you would get the above-mentioned drop. Also, there is a much larger drop in the cupronickel percentages, which is more likely to be consistent with the increase in steel coins rather than hoarding, as they are less likely to be hoarded.
Not all who wander are lost.
