I've slacked off for several months on my local penny activities....only doing my every few months Canada trip.

As some of you know....I added air shocks to my minivan for heavy hauling purposes.....the wife had to have the van yesterday so I used my recently purchases pos work truck....and as it turned out...probably a good idea.....

Picked up 2500 lbs of pennies and 500 lbs of other coins.....a 1.5 ton load.....not sure the van could of carried that much load....3000 lbs is even a lot for most trucks (this old beast has over a 1 ton spring package).

US Customs about crapped their pants as it was all out in the open in open buckets covering the floor of the truck bed (thankful for no rain yesterday!!!!).

This might be the biggest raw pile I've ever had at one time......

Is there any easy way to post "coin p0rn" here ? I've never posted a picture on this forum....

Got some serious sorting ahead of me this weekend....hoping to net 1000 lbs from this load.

Pictures are a fun thing to keep us all excited about the penny gig. Wish the forum had an ability to just paste in an image directly from our computers.

I would think it makes sense to go get Canadian coin in quantity if you are willing to sort and return it to Canada. Canadian coin has a better copper yield, 98% Cu vs 95% Cu, and the advantage of finding a bunch of US coin bought at a 20% discount. Currently because of the lower metal values I make the best return on the US coins found in Canada and deposited into my US account.

OK, I'll bite. How do you import 1.25 tons of Canadian coins into the USA? There has to be some type of permit or paper work required for this. I go to Canada often and the coins I get there are almost all steel cents. I get more copper Canadians in the USA versus what I get in Canada. Fact. Didn't they filter most of the copper out of circulation with some sort of government program? Enlighten me please. The exchange ratio..........a plus BUT most of Canadian Coppers are awful thin and light. The later years before the switch to junk metal are so thin I can almost bend them. Have you taken this into consideration? Thanks for any info.

This would be too much fun. I'd do it as a non-stop marathon just for giggles.

The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities.

The Royal Canadian Mint has an alloy recovery program for nickel and cupro-nickel coins, but not for copper pennies. Most Canadian sorters report much higher percentages of copper than we get in the US because Canadian pennies were made of copper through 1996. The weight of the pennies was changed several times by thinning the coins and straightening out the edges, but the composition remained 98% copper. Even the light ones are still worth more than face with the current spot price.

I only get 60 pounds at a time, so I can't help with the first question

There currently is no export ban on Canadian coin.

As long as you are not bringing in more than $10k face value, you do not even have to claim it.

However, I do think that Cessna had to mention something after the border guys saw 41 buckets of coins in the back of a pickup.

Pictures would be nice if all possible. I think it would raise a bit more eyebrows to bring back 1000 pounds of zinc and steel coins back across the border after such a load!

Pics to follow soon.

I've made this border crossing with nearly a ton of pennies/nickels about 40 times .....about 15% of the time in the first 25 crossings it was a serious interrogation at US Customs...a few times it was up to 1 hour plus in a little closed room....photocopy of every piece of paper in my vehicle, etc....I just stuck to my real story...."I sort these for the older copper/nickel coins and return the stuff (70% or so roughly) that I do not want"....they have a record of every time I do this....it is on their computer...so they ask, why is it always around $3000 - $4000 are you trying to structure you runs to avoid the $10k limit?....No, the structured size is a function of my vehicle structure...can't carry more than about 1 ton..... So, after the last long questioning....I asked the US Customs guy if he would just type in a few words that explains exactly what/why i do this....I even gave them a little 2 minute...10 sound bite story of the death of the US dollar and inflation and told them I make it a habit to diversify out of paper FRNs that cost 4 zinc cents to print $100FRN....I think they got the message....

Last 5 trips have been smooth sailing. 2 times ago, I pulled up and the guy said "Hi, Todd - got a lot of coins today?".....

For reference....it takes about 164 Canadian "copper" cents on mixed average to make a pound...US requires about 150 for the same copper weight....Canada has like 5 flavors of copper weight pennies......so, only if the exchange rate is 164 / 150 = 1.09 so only when $1USD = $1.09CND of more is there a discount to hoard Canadian.

3 years ago when I first started hoarding CND there was a 50%+ copper rate in S.W. Ontario....the last few times it has been as low as 35%.....it is my understanding the the RCM is pulling all 2000 and older coins via an optical scanner...even the pennies have a little logo below the queens neck (added in 2000) and it sees this and pulls the older coppers that do not have this logo. I think this is the reason for 52% copper find turning into 35% copper find today (2 year time frame)....and 100% of my Canadian Pennies comes from Customer Circulation....not banks....so i'm getting the best of the best....mostly charity penny drives.

Maybe if you post pictures, it will be what hoard needs to get up from his computer and take a few pictures of his penny processing center. I even had a memory card reader drop shipped to him lol. (that was his previous excuse, before laziness and work)

41 buckets x $100 Fv per bucket = $4100 FV....assume $1.70/lb (5 copper flavors, zinc, and steel)....$4100 / $1.70 = 2411 lbs of Canadian pennies.

I hope to pull 1000# of copper....would require about 42% copper rate...I hope these charity pennies are from some deep piggy banks!

Had about 400 lbs of US Clad / Canadian Nickel up in the passenger foot well.....to spread the load around.

It's a 2500 series Chevrolet with a 1 ton H.D. axle and rear leaf spring pack of over 1 ton - about 1.5 ton springs.....including me and full gas it was over 1.5 ton payload...and it was just starting to squat a little....I'd put 2 - 2.5 ton in it no problem.

Was running 65PSI tire pressure cold....rode super nice on the way home....floated like a big Cadillac.

Customs just laughed at all the buckets....officer called his friend over to have a look and hear the story....i saw one of the officers starting to fill out this little orange sheet that means go to the serious inspection/interrogation line.....so I turned up the nerdieness and mesmerized them with penny statistics until they made me leave.....one of the officers said "Your too smart for us - you can leave now....".

I've found this to be a very effective "Penny Jedi" Mind Trick....overload their minds with data, facts and statistics....they start to glaze over quickly....start mumbling math calculations and then get really excited and spit out a number like "1000 lbs of 98% copper alloy"....

The only improvement I can think of is if I was wearing something like a "Realcent 2009 Penny Hoarding Convention" T-Shirt.

With a haul like that, some one should donate a "Realcent 2009 Penny Hoarding Convention" T-Shirt to wear on your next trip. A little advertising item. Nice picture!

If you bring any more truckloads home like that, you'll need this: You must be logged in to see this link.

Just dump the coins on the conveyor and have it send them to the ryedales, then from the ryedales to the rolling machines.

I will typically run 4 Ryedales at a time....since this will be a simple 1 pass "copper keep".......I should be able to do about $300/hr/machine.....less feeding loss, jams, etc....hope to net $1000/hr from the gang of machines.....probably 4 hrs of work.

I need to clean and lube all 4 machines before I start the job.

My record is 100,000 coins without a jam on a clean machine....not counting bent/buger coins....

Would you be willing to sell advertisement of the hood? LOL
You must be logged in to see this link. Plus having a huge penny logo!

This is GREAT! I want to ride shotgun with you or better yet we need to have a convoy of trucks. I think 12 or more would be interesting!

I bet your name is on every government watch list imaginable!

I would have loved to been a fly on the wall the first time you pulled through. Did they make you count one bucket to make sure you were not over the dollar limit? This is amazing!
