Alright, so I've heard both sides of the story. I try to do at least two boxes of nickels each week, and I'm thinking about picking up the pace now that summer is coming around and I'll be out of school! Huzzah. I run across a fair share of S mint nickels. I assume they are from the same years as the copper Lincolns that had S mints. I do save those. But on the nickel front, should I be saving them? Worth anything? Thanks a bunch, guys, you all are a great help.

I save all s mints before 1960. They're hard to come by for me.

Well, I keep anything 1958 and before. I am talking about the S mints that seem to be between, say, 1965-71. I don't know an exact date range.

I keep all S-mint nickels, no matter what the year.

I enjoy taking long walks off short piers.

+1

The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities.

During 1968-1970, the San Francisco Mint took over nickel production from the Philly Mint. So those S-minted nickels are just as common as 1968-1970 P nickels would have been. S-minted nickels count for 52.4% of 1968's nickels, 37.2% of 1969, and 31.7% of 1970. Not rare enough to be worth saving.

But definitely save any 1912-1954 S-mint nickels!

Wow...good info. Thanks for letting us know. Now I dont feel so bad about not setting aside S mint nickels from the late 60's.

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.
