I pull all my 82 cents and put them in a seprate container. tonight I tested about 50 of them and only 8 of the 50 were zinc. I think i will try this again somtime with 500 of them to see if i get the same ratio.

anyone else find that the zinc 82's are rarer than the coppers.

I remember reading somewhere that the mint did not switch to the zinc until late in the year (I want to say September?) If that is the case hypathetically there should be a ratio of 3:1 copper assuming that the mint remained consistent in their production figures for the year. Hope this helps. Cheers!

Wow! Really? I get significantly more zincs than coppers in my 1982 sort, I toss them all in a bin and after i'm done with a box or two, I will weight each one and most of the time I end up with 4-5 times more zincs than coppers. Then out of all the zincs, about 90% are large date P-mints. The last box I did a week or so ago, had around 100 1982's, and only 8 were copper.

I don't do an official ratio, but I think about 70% of my 1982s are copper.

My ratio is pretty close to what theo mentioned. I seem to get about 70-75 or so 1982 coppers per $25 box, and kick about 20-25 zincs to the dump pile. I weigh each one on a digital scale to ensure accuracy. This number seems very consistent, with the low end being about 60 and the high end about 85 for one box.

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

I also find that most of the 1982 are copper. Have been finding a lot of '82s in my boxes of pennies also. Sure glad they are there cause the other coppers have been very few here lately. Have sorted a bunch of pennies and have yet to find a P-mint penny. HAPPY TAX DAY TO ALL! UCK

Four out of five 1982s are copper, in my experience.

1/3 out of mine are copper. my overall ratio seems to be low, at only 15% average so far. Probably means I have a bunch of active hoarders in my area. kinda sucks.

I think 60-70% (much more than half) of my '82s are copper.

As far as I know, it is stated "In God We Trust" on the US dollar. How can I trust this currency if I do not believe in God?

Possession is nine-tenths of the law.

When I give my two cents, they're always copper!

I think the ratio reported here has generally been in the 75-80% copper range. They did the changover in October of that year if I remember correctly. I have a bag of 7500 82's I am going to run through the sorter one of these days and have a contest for the members to guess the copper percentages.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I think I should buy a scale to weight the 1982 cents. lol I haven't been keeping any of them. I know on one of the threads someone said Harbor Freight sells the scales, is that right? Also what sort of scales are you using to weight a 50 lb bag of copper cents and where could I buy one? Thank you

I've gotten 1:2 ratio, coppers to zincs. Significantly more zincs.

Then again, the ratio in my area is extremely low. Maybe only 15% coppers unless from CWR from someone's old penny stash or something. We're absolutely flooded with 2006-2008 zinc pennies.

Before I got a copper sorter, I was saving ALL of my 1982's and had about a box worth of 82's when i finally got my sorter. I didn't count exactly how many were there but was definitely surprised to see about a 70-80% yield of copper 1982's.
