I have a coin that is sort of a gold, brass color. It says $10 on the top and Diez Pesos on the bottom. On the other side it says Estados Unidos Mexicanos. Is is worth the $10 that is says at the top? Where can I exchange it for US currency?

I think it's just that they use the "$" sign for pesos too. Ten pesos would be about .75 US by my figuring. |

The "$" is the official symbol of the Mexican peso. It does not indicate, now or ever, any relation to the US dollar.
If the coin is dated 1992-present, it is worth 1/10th to 1/15th its face value, in US dollars depending on the current exchange rate (You must be logged in to see this link.). However, most US banks will not convert foreign coins into US dollars, as the fees they themselves are changed for the process are prohibitive. Unless you have a lot of Mexican coins, don't expect anyone to exchange this coin's value for you. If you really need the cash, try selling the coin on eBay. And of course it's always valid currency in Mexico, and presumably in border towns.
If the coin is dated before 1992, it has been demonetized by the Mexican Central Bank and has no legal tender value anywhere (but may have metal value). It may have collectible value, and again I suggest eBay. |

Thanks for all the interesting data. The coin is a 1998. It is now relegated to a pile of 5-pence, franks, pfennigs, and other misc. coins. |
