It seems like a better organized set up on ebay for copper would really help sales.
There are two sides to the Cu Bullion market - bars that are priced way over spot, and pennies that are selling way under spot.
Currently Copper is traded under Bullion-Silver, Bullion-Gold and Coins: US-1 Cent on ebay. Also saw some copper bars in the Collectables area. There may be other areas too.
Since we are really trading coins for bullion content, the listings under Coins: US are mixed in with the collectable coins. The listings with Silver and Gold bullion are just miscatagorized out of lack of options. It makes no sense to list the Canadian Cu Pennies under Coin: US, yet putting Canadian into Coins: Canada is not going to attract the pure copper buyer.
Also, pennies don't get positioned beside the higher priced bars leading the bar buyers to think they need to pay many times melt to invest in Cu, when pennies are the cheapest answer to copper speculation.
Nickel is even more spread around and less represented on ebay.
Things in the wrong catagory generally suffer a disadvantage to those correctly listed. The problem is that there is no correct place to list.
If others agree with the logic of having a seperate catagory called:
"Coins & Paper Money > Bullion > Copper" or maybe "Coins & Paper Money > Bullion > Copper and Nickel"
perhaps we can each email ebay requesting this new catagory in our own words. A few dozen requests and they might just do it. Also there is likely an ebay forum where this can be presented.
Any one know the best place to ask?

Hello, thanks for waiting and welcome to eBay Live Help! My name is Anna. How may I help you?
I belong to a group of about 200 sellers who want to ask for a new category. How can we do this?
Oh, you can write to us the suggestion together with the other 200 sellers about that.
I can give you a link to do that.
How would I send something from 200 people, and to where?
One moment please while I pull the link for you.
You must be logged in to see this link.
Please click the "Email Us" at the bottom of the page just below the Contact Customer Support.
You can forward this link to the other sellers for them to use to write in as well.
OK, will try that. Thanks.
And there we have it. If we can get everybody to do this, we may get it.(?) It makes sense to me. |

I just posted to the contact as suggested; here is what I put in case anyone wants to cut and paste it.

We would like to have a seperate catagory called:
"Coins & Paper Money > Bullion > Copper" "Coins & Paper Money > Bullion > Copper and Nickel"
The bottom line is, by this, we anticipate higher sales and higher final auction amounts.
Please let me know if this is possible and when.
Thanks.

I am emailing as I type this. A great idea and observation. Thank you for thinking of us all and getting the ball rolling on this.
I too have wondered why bars or rounds cut from bars go for such a high price, whilest copper cents go 1.6 per. The best looking price I have seen was coppercave listing for $4 per Lb. I just think for a bullion purchase on lower priced metal like copper, I would like to see cents priced and sold like that. Per lb, not per coin and a bit closer to the true value of the metal. |

Make sure the subject on the contact form says:
To: eBay Customer Support Subject: Sending Suggestions to eBay
When I used the link from the chat conversation above, the subject was something about password problems, which won't send it to the right people.
I did this about two years ago suggesting they add another model train manufacturer to the categories (one that I frequently sold) and it showed up two days later |

Awesome idea, and a great example of just taking action instead of lamenting. Sadly, i had fallen into the latter category :)
I think that A) We can easily get this added. It is in Ebay's best interest to have things sell for as much as possible and B) It will cost them virtually nothing (simply some time) to add the category.
Thanks man! |

Thanks for all you guys jumping on the suggestion. Talk about a group of Type A get it done people. I've sent in an personalized email following the posted directions.
As I hinted when I started the thread, there is a huge disconnect between the current selling price of coins, copper spot values, and the prices on the "bullion bars". Coins have government guarenteed content and weight. Bars are a crap shoot. In the silver and gold market we buy and sell Maple Leafs and ASEs at a premium to spot, and discount the Easter Bunny rounds. In Copper we are discounting the Maple Leafs (Canadian Pennies) and US pennies while inflating the value on the chopped up bus bars that have been stamped in some guy's back shed.
As for me, I'm not going to sell coins by count any more. Copper sells by the pound and by the ton. My pounds of copper just happen to be in the form of nice government backed bullion coins. |

| legacypac, I totally forgot to say thanks for a truly great idea. Sorry for that, don't want to steal your thunder. It's all yours. The "cha-ching" went off in my head, and dollar signs scrolled across my eyes, and that was it. |

| It is totally a group effort fb101 and I totally value your running with it. I posted the idea but due to work commitments could not spend the time figuring out exactly how to do it. I also figured that there is enough experiance and brains here to get it done. |

Sent tonight: A search of "copper" tonight in the Bullion catagory finds that the copper bullion people currently have listings under Silver(86) and Gold(33) = 119 listings without a proper home under bullion. Plus there is a whole active market for copper coins (pennies generally) with bullion value. There are currently more Copper Bullion (119 listings in bullion plus all the coin listings) then the existing "Bullion: Platinum & Palladium" category with only 104 active listings.
Food for others to chew on. |
