Hi all, I've recently become interested in sorting and hoarding copper, and am happy to have found this forum. I've been an on and off coin collector for years, and have a 2009 collector's coin guide with values, etc. I asked my local bank branch today for a $25 box and was told I could reserve one for next Thursday, in the meantime I have been sorting through my substantial pocket change reserve. I have a few questions that I couldn't figure out with the book or easily deduce from the posts here;
It seems there is a split in 1982 pennies between copper and zinc productions; how can a 1982 penny be analyzed to tell the difference?
The book I am referring to has a few double die etc. errors to look out for in 1972, 1970, and 1955 as I recall. Are there any other rare finds to keep an eye out for, such as the 1983 ddr that was mentioned recently?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks again.

Welcome.
1982 copper pennies were made through October, I believe, so you are bound to find more copper 82s than zincers. You can weigh the pennies using a small scale or balance a ruler on a thumbtack, making sure that it's centered. Then place a known copper on one end and the 82 on the other.
Other varieties to look for are the wide AM varieties that are on 1998, 1999, and 2000 cents... Correct me on the years if I am wrong. |

| Also look for the 84 DDO, the 92 close am which is a true rare find, the 99-s close am. These are a few of my favorite things. A 99 wide am would be a very nice find if you can get one, but the others are all nice as well. I would just buy a cheap digital scale that you can use to figure out the zinc 82's from the coppers. Copper 82's weigh 3.1 grams and the Zinc ones weigh 2.5 . |

The copper cents weigh 3.3 grams, the zinc 2.5 grams. If an 82 weighs 3.3 grams it is copper.
I sort by hand and it only took me a few boxes to be able to feel which is heavier. Anymore I hold onto all the 82s so I don't have to sort them next time.
I don't worry about errors. There are a few out there, but the chance of finding one is small, the chance of being able to sell one for a profit even smaller. |

for the 82's you can toss them against tile, glass, or wood and the copper ones will "ring" while the non coppers won't. That is the po' mans way. |
