So, today I went to the bank to pick up a box to sort tonight (hand sort). When I asked the teller for a $25 box of pennies, she paused and looked at me and said "What?" with this stunned look on her face. She then refered me to another teller because she didn't understand why I would want pennies anyway.

If you have any interesing stories about reactions that people have had, post it.

i think people that get a lot probably don't get the reactions anymore. i'd be curious to find out what they tell others though... "this guy comes in every week and gets 1,000 dollars of pennies"

For a middle school student - that has got to be a real hoot! My CU assume I need it for my business or something. I have told a couple of tellers I'm looking for old coins.

good cover . For me, it was a new teller, so she was kind of confused. When my friends come over, they see these giant boxes full of coins and they are like "WTF". I just smile and say "copper pennies. You should try it sometime"

I had a couple bricks in my car, and my friend said can I wish I would have had a couple of these to fill my tank up with gas this morning.

LOL.. it's not so bad.. I bribe her with chocolate and let her use my cart. And when she called the other day because somebody screwed up on her coin shipment I was happy to drop her by 8 boxes of bank wrapped rolls. Of course I do spread my action around to several banks so I don't wear my favorite tellers out.

I remember the first time I rolled up a few rolls of zinc with one of my automatic rolling machines and took them into one of my banks to deposit. I took in 2300 rolls.

The vault lady asks "How many pennies do you have?"
Me: "You don't want to know."
Her: "No, how many do you have?"
Me: "You really don't want to know."
Her: "No, really, how many pennies do you have?"
Me: "About a million."
Her: "No way! You have $100,000 in pennies?!!!"
Me: "No, a million pennies is only 10,000 dollars."

Right after that this bank put a limit on how many I could turn in. I can't imagine why they would do that.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Hey, our own delivery service.... Are you country wide, or just a specific region?

I have a regular route set up I order coins each week from the same banks and have 4 dump banks that I stop at each week. 3 of my dump banks have self service coin counting machines so after I get done dumping my zincers in their machine I just exchange my bags for any bags they have acquired over the week. It works great I just hope they don't decide to get rid of their self service machines. I have no problem dumping $800.00 to $1000.00 worth of zinc each week this way. And with stopping at my supply banks the same day each week the tellers know when I walk in the door that the "CRAZY PENNY GUY IS HERE AGAIN" and they just automatically head for the vault before I even get to the counter to get what ever bags they accumulated since the last time I was there.

COPPER - the "poormans" precious metal!!!

SELLING - $100.00 face copper shipped to you for $189.00 machine rolled or bagged - PM me if your interested.

One time when I was walking through the door, the head teller ducked under the desk. By her facial expression before she when under, I think was saying something like "Shoot, the penny collecting guy has 2 bags; why does he have to come now, sigh". Then she comes up from the desk and says "4 boxes?"

My favorite reaction from my bank, "Only four bags today?"

"If we keep selling you pennies, we wont have any for the good customers."

One time I took a JFK facing lincoln in. "wow that is soo cool, let me go show this to the manager."

Compared to ya'll I don't get many, but some tellers don't seem to understand. Most are pretty helpful though.

Are you throwing that out?

Today I tried a different TD Canada Trust branch tonight. They came up with two blocks of nickels and two blocks of pennies, but said they had more in the vault if I call ahead to the right person - which I'll be doing tomorrow. Sounds like they have to ship out regularly (they are in a downtown area so lots of business customers??). Inching toward setting up those supply banks correctly.

legacy, its the banks by the fast food places that normally have coins in reserve in case their big customers need pennies. One bank I went to said the local Mcy D's (very high volume) needed $100 in pennies per week. So they had an extra $100 in the vault incase they didnt get delivered to one week. They sold me the extra hundred.

Hoard, I've had the same reaction. I always ask how many they can part with, and some tellers just dont understand. Some do, and are willing to dig through all the tellers safes and the vault just to get rid of their "pesky" pennies.

Alright, I had to bring up this thread again to post a great story that happened today while I was spending halves...
My total was 6.85, so I give the cashier 13 halves and 35 cents. She freaks out like I gave her gold and goes "Are these 50 cent quarters?" I was looking at her trying not to laugh and she said to a girl in the back "Keesha! You gotta come see all of these 50 cent quarters!" Man, I tried so hard not to laugh... 50 cent quarters.

"Hi, how are you."
"Good. What can I do for you today?"
"I'd like two boxes of pennies, please."
"............Excuse me??"

They react almost as if I'd said something bad, it's funny.

I do a lot of drivebys since my ordering just gets me the results of the RCM Alloy Recovery Program. I cleaned out all the local banks of surplus coin along time ago, so now I just pick part of the Metro area and use Sat afternoon to go coin hunting. I think I actually prefer the randomness of the whole thing rather then the predictability of regular orders.

So this AM I get a call from the TD Branch where my coin account actually sits. TD is great because they have long hours and lots of branches. So I just buy and dump wherever I find myself. I save my home branch from the coin deluge of my dumps because they are the ones that could charge me the easiest. Anyway, they called me last week to pick up some Canadian Halfs and a 1968 Dollar. This AM they called and offered me 290 rolls of pennies. Appearantly coin has been coming in with customers all week in droves. So I went over there and bought all thier pennies, gave them a few sorted blocks so they would not be completely pennyless, and bought up all thier nickels. $60 of the nickels were ones marked by me maybe 4 months ago which says something about how fast they move coin in that little branch, but there were a few nice CWR blocks of nickels too.
