Welcome to the forum AndreaGail. Careful, theis sorting thing can become addictive. Where in the country are you located? Different areas have different percentages. If you decide to sort more you will have to find a good place to stack up all that copper, you will find quite a few wheat cents, and possibly even the occasional Indian.. though there are certain members of this forum that still do not believe Indians exist in the wild. No matter how much you sort you will probably never find any Klingon copper though.. that must be purchased from an off-world distributer. |

My first official (but still unofficial, since I'm still tabulating wheats) report since getting my Coin Artist today:
Out of my first $100 that I've sorted, much of which was in CWRs, I've got $33.71 in coppers. Not bad for my first day on the team, if I do say so myself. The bank I got these from is a smaller community bank where I've kept an account in my former hometown since I'm still traveling there about once every two weeks. Looks like I'll be going back for a lot more rolls at that branch when I'm in town. |

Hi HCBTT, I'm located in central colorado, west of denver. The bank I used was 1st bank btw. Oh and, that'd be great to find indians, but as of now plenty happy to find wheats. I was surprised at the amount in the box. In four rolls, got 4,4,5,6 wheats respectively

That is a good wheat count AndreaGail. If I remember right, the area you are in is a lower percentage area. Your results are not atypical for the area. "Just sort more!"
You might want to start plugging those wheats in a book. Kind of fun to see how many holes you can fill from circulation. |

Had to work Saturday so I didn't get to buy many coins. Only 20 CWR Pennies and 3 CWR halves at one bank and 24 Bank rolled boxes of pennies plus 13 rolls of shiny new NM quarters at the other bank. |

Reading here about all the halves sorting got me inspired to try it myself. Headed across the 49th today and acquired:
Paid Items: $202.50 in Halfs (turn in my accumulated US change and some ATM proceeds)
Free Items: Nice Canvas Bag from Bank of America Free Coin Rollers for Nickels and Pennies from Bank of America Some flat rate boxes and envelopes for nickel shipping Info on getting my own US PO Box
These were my first halves to roll search. Even though I have lived in the US in University, I had never even touched one before except for a single 1968 silver one I got off ebay with some other coins.
I can now offically join the SKUNKED ON HALVES CLUB as a bag carrying member. Oh well - I will build a half decent set from these and then have fun confusing Americans in stores with thier own coins. Did you know you could sort 1/2's while driving reasonably safely? Sorted them all and got skunked :( |

Hit a few banks between appointments and waiting for people to call me back. Nothing spectactular until I was heading home on a different route and spotted a new branch of one of my credit unions with a big sign that said New Longer Hours". Walked in at 5 to 7PM and asked for nickels and pennies. They said "we can certianly do the pennies" which lead me to ask for them all of course! Turns out a local school had a penny drive and had just dumped there - I hauled out over 8 X $50 bags full of CWR, plus a bunch of CW nickels :) Stocking up for the Ryedale, so no sorting report to go with the buying report. |

Purchased 8 boxes today! Twice my usual weekly buy. Weights were from 6.755 kg to 6.8kg. Which should equate to a cu percentage of 25 to 28%. To approximate cu yield, I use the following. 2500 zn pennies @2.5g = 6250g weight of empty box & wrappers = 125g sum = weight of all zn box = 6375g
Example: 6755g box - 6375= 380g excess weight Cu coin= 3.1g zn coin= 2.5g difference =.6g 380/.6=633 expected cu pennies 633/2500=25% (my expected percentage yeild) 25-28% is good for here. |

that's what i've been doing, only have about 4 or 5 openings in my 1941 and up book but lots needed in the 09-40 range. I've never been one to care too much about condition, although I'll always upgrade with superior ones. Circulated is fine ...the rest go in a ziplock bag to seperate them from the common coppers

did another box today (my BOTW has free coin sorter that I use...don't need an account) and got:
450 coppers (18%) 4 wheats 1 canadian 78
came back down to earth on my wheat %, but got 4% more Cu, which wasn't bad ... also tried my luck on 2 rolls of halves but got only clad |

lol welcome to the club...halves can be fun because of the greater % increase if you score silver (about $2.50 for a 40% and $6.10 for a 90%) but I've been quite unlucky as of late coming up with mostly clad
It is however, like you said, fun to test a cashier's knowledge on coins...I love hearing the "you don't see these too often" , "what's this" or "why are you spending all your silver halves?" |

Was in Blaine WA mailing my first .99 Ni packages out. Spent halves on postage ok (clerk made me put my phone number in the rolls so if you get the ones with my phone number on them, no need to open them). Next tried to buy gas with 1/2s. While I was filling sent my wife in to pay with 7 rolls. The casher starts yelling at us "we aren't a bank! leave your car right there and go to the bank down the street." I said... "you don't like legal tender?" "We can't accept these, we would have to count them, you can't use these". I pulled out my AMEX and collected Airmiles instead. Let the station pay the highest credit card fees they can :)
Oh and didn't buy any coin today - only bank closed 5 min before I arrived :( |

Sounds like the same guy that runs the gas station where I occasionally buy gas.. LOL
"We are not a bank!" "Go cash these in at the bank and bring normal money to buy gas with!" I just say fine.. I'll buy my gas where they will accept my money and go to a station down the street.
I like that statement "We can't acept these, we would have to count them" If I pay with fiat dollars don't they have to count them?
Tomorrow I am going to buy gas with halves, just to prove it can be done. Heck, for a guy that can buy gas with a brick or 2 of pennies, buying it with halves should be a cake walk.
I did OK at lunch time drive buys today. Got 15 CWR pennies at one bank and 2 boxes of CWR pennies and 35 half dollars at another bank. Spent a bunch of the halves to pay for lunch and a drink at Starbucks. Yesterday I bought my lunch entirely with rolls of pennies. |
