How often do we find memorials minted in San Francisco. So far I have only found 1 out of $600 hand sorted.
Also, has anyone ever found a coin made out of the wrong metal? Example copper 1943?

here in the central U.S. i average around 7 or so a box. the 68-s seems to be the toughest. lots of times i find more wheats than s mints per box.
now if youre talking proof cents i have yet to find one. |

I find them here and there, maybe 5-10 per box. I havent saved them unless they were BU condition but looking back maybe I should have? |

San Francisco cent production usually was lower than the production of Denver or Philadelphia. For example, in 1974 Philadelphia produced 4,232,140,523 cents, Denver produced 4,235,098,000 cents while San Francisco produced 412,039,228 cents, of which 2,612,568 were proof cents not meant for circulation (409,426,660 San Francisco cents produced for circulation).
4,235,098,000 + 4,232,140,523 + 409,426,660 = 8,876,665,183
409,426,660 divided into 8,876,665,183 = .046% (roughly less than 5%)
Factor in pennies getting lost, mangled, worn out, lost, etc. and San Francisco cents are bound to be more scarce in circulation. |

I am lucky.. since I live about 40 miles from the San Francisco mint. I get quite a few more of them than you guys further east. Usually coins tend to stay close to where they are released. Remember, besides lower mintages they were also produced for far fewer years. I got a neg on eBay for a bag of copper cents I sold because the guy thought they should have been mostly S mints because of my location. Truth is.. they are scarce even here. I have done the statistics on a few bags to satisfy my own curiousity and it runs about 7 to 7.5% S mint cents out of the total copper cents. So that would work out to about 1 roll per box of unsorted cents.. a much heavier concentration than the rest of you are experiencing, but still pretty scarce. If I were hand sorting I would definately put the S mint cents in a different bucket.. I think they would bring a premium if you had a bag of solid S mint cents. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Future memorial Lincoln cent collectors will be looking for those already-elusive 1968-1974 S-minted cents, probably the toughest holes to fill in the post-wheat penny folders. I'm sure they'll have a numismatic premium someday, even if it takes 15-20 years to get there.
Now, S-minted nickels 1968-1970 are too common to save yet, unless one is already hoarding nickels. |

I purchased a bag from HCBTT to help out my "S" percentage. Only came up to be about 7%, but that is better than .07%. I keep "S" separate in hopes of one day of making a box. The hardest dates for me were 72 S and 1968 S. |

You're not resurrecting the old "penny" versus "cent" terminology debate, are you Art? hahaha. |

Yeah it is---a little past 3 in the morning. 'Bout time to hit the hay. I need well-rested eyes to find those S pennies. Speaking of S pennies, guess what penny I got back in change today? A 1955-S! Made my day. I hadn't got a wheat penny in change in a while and was starting to wonder. The cashier even noticed it, and remarked, "Oh! This penny is really old." Saying something like that will get my attention faster than anything else! haha. |

Since I posted, I have sorted another $20 and found 7-8 "S" pennies.
How about pennies struck on the wrong material? The coin books say that there are several different possibilities. |

I found a 1955-S last year. That was the first and only 55-S I've found in circulation. Discovery of that coin struck a cord with me as a 1955-S cent was the first coin that I ever purchased - to complete my 1941-1974 Whitman folder. Many moons have passed and many coins have jingled since that day. |

I do set them aside... But never kept track of percentages per box or anything... Though I think mine average a little better than wheat cents(5-15 per box). |
