Today I got a Brinks box that weighed 14.0 lb. I knew it would be almost all zinc, but I opened it anyway. Inside were all 2006-P, but 3 rolls had old coins in the middle. 2 coppers, and 1 canadian. Anyone else get a box like this? Almost all new coins, but they ruin it?
Anyone interested in buying some?

That's why it's always a good idea to keep a few boxes in reserve..
Even if I get skunked I can generally find enough laying around to give me my sorting fix. |

And I thought I had a lot sitting around. :D. I only have a little over 30 boxes, and 2 vault bags full. I'm in the process of breaking down the rolls in the bags, so when the ryedale arives, I'm ready! |

HCBT, where do you get those nice looking plastic tubs from? My bank has some, but they always pour the rolls into boxes, and never offer the plastic ones? do bank supply places sell them? |

That is only the primary pile. I am still trying to whittle down the other 2 piles. I have been kind of busy at the day job and have gotten a little behind on my sorting.
My banks will never give me any of those plastic tubs, the plastic trays or the aluminum trays they use to hold the rolls of coins either.. LOL. I get them all from my bank supply place. I have lots of them. |

HCBT, if you don't mind my asking, about how much cash do you typically have tied up in unsorted pennies? I've got $750 now, and don't plan on keeping more than $1,000.
At least they aren't very easy for someone to walk off with :) |

Why keep any in reserve.....churn and burn it back into the system...those big piles of unsorted are probably 80% zinc....get rid of it...turn it into copper!!!!
Put it to the Ryedale plow.....gow some copper...

It's classic hoarder behavour.. buying more of something than you can use.. and stacking it up.. LOL.
How does that poem go?
But mouse, thou art not thyself alone.. In proving foresight to be vain.. The best laid schemes o' mice and men.. Oft go awry.. Leaving naught but sorrow and pain.. For promised joy..
Alas, I have gotten a little behind on my sorting. The day job has been really busy so the unsorted boxes have stacked up a little. I have about 5k in unsorted boxes right now. I should be more efficient and cycle through them, but I haven't been as efficient as I would like to be. I have made a little progress.. I have worked the reserve down about 1k from its peak. The good thing is that the sooner you capture the unsorted boxes the higher the copper percentage. Also, it is nice to know I have a small stack to work off of for those times I get skunked. My goal this year is to get that reserve down below 40 boxes.
I think horgad has the same problem.. his wife even cut him off from buying more boxes.
So I have a few more boxes in reserve than I probably should.. but is that so bad? After all, it's only pennies, right? Actually though, you never know when you won't be able to get more pennies, or when Brinks might start pulling all the copper out, or when the government might discontinue the penny. Those of us that stacked up a few more boxes than we could immediately sort will still have pennies to sort long after everybody else has gone dry. |

If I could, I would store up a years worth of boxes to sort. There is no telling when the rug could be pulled out from under us and the penny supply will come to halt, but yes my wife, although supporting, has her limits. I cry a little everytime that I have to pull a box to sort out of my stash instead of from my weekly purchases. |

Hoard, The mint called, seems there is a penny shortage. They want to know if you can sort faster and turn in some zinc. Maybe you can find some junior copper miners to help. Guess you wont run out anytime soon. |

Tell them to talk to my banks and get them to lift the limits on how many zincs I can deposit. If they can send me a Topeka size shipment of new shiny 2008's maybe we can work a deal. I better go out and get some more boxes this week.. wouldn't want to get short-stacked..
I have been waiting and hoping for that penny shortage.. we haven't had one in a good long while. I love it when grocery stores are willing to pay 75 cents or a dollar per roll for zinc.. helps cover the price increase of milk and eggs.
Actually, it's not me.. it's Ardent Listener that caused the penny shortage.. he never sorts his.

Hey, I'm sorting as fast as I can, but if I can afford to buy more pennies than I can sort then I'm more than willing to have them stack up.
Like has been said, it's only a matter of time before it will be harder to buy so many pennies at once or before the percentage of copper starts dropping significantly.

Turnover is the key. I don't hold on to unsorted boxes or zinc bags for more than a week. |

I've got a lot now from stocking up waiting for the ryedale, but I've already wiped out every bank around me (I still need to hit up 2 in my area), and I have traveled "far, and wide" looking for boxes.
I've got about a grand waiting. FEDEX hurry the ryedale here! please. |

I agree that turnover is key. You want to cycle your hoard capital as frequently as possible to maximize the copper you can capture. Having some additional boxes in reserve allows you to keep the cycle churning even when you have short weeks on finding fresh boxes. As moboman has experienced, sometimes there just aren't any more boxes to get.
Think of it kind of like keeping non-perishable food in your pantry. It is there any time day or night that you want to eat. You don't have to run to the store to get the supplies for each meal. You never have to worry about being hungry when the stores are closed. |
