I decided to do a little research to see if I get any of my old zincs back from Brinks. My bank has a free Coinstar so when I dump there I'm pretty sure they're ending up right back in the Brinks hopper. Anyways I am painting 100 zincs of each dump batch with bright yellow paint now to see if I get any of them back. I'm sure the odds are slim but I'm betting dumping 400 marked coins a week I should see one or more back eventually.

I painted 50 zincs green to throw in my pocket change to use at stores and when those are gone I'll do 50 more and so on.

Anyone else marking your returned zincs? For a little fun we could do our own version of WheresGeorge and everyone can paint some zincs yellow and mark their initials on one side with a Sharpie and see if any of us end up with someone elses zincs. Who's game?

And the sharpie Idea is a really neat idea.that one I might do even though the chances are so slim ever finding another one.

I have thought about doing it as well. Don't know about the Sharpie marking though....I loose dump at a bank and I KNOW they would ask where I got all the (insert color here), pennies. I do have a coffee can with one side of every penny painted white. Found them that way....I'll go out and buy fluorescent orange paint and begin painting some zincs. We need a color sign up sheet....I don't believe it is illegal to paint coins as we would not be destroying or defacing them.....I don't think....hehe.

Deal

p.s. Do you guys think the lobby machines, or the Coinstar machines will reject the painted coins if painted too heavily? I got it....I'll paint the ones I use for gas....They would really love me.

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

It would be great if everybody could post a picture of one of their marked pennies. A scanner works fine for taking a picture of a coin. If you can't figure out how get the image up on the board, mail it to me and I will put it up.

I do that only with halves. A perm blue marker on the edge, takes 3 seconds to do a full roll. I have marked around $75,000 that way. I only dump in 2 diff banks (total about 5-6 branches) When I get sealed brinks type boxes I tend to get 2-3 halves per roll that I know I have owned in the past. Sometimes right next to silver.

Ok instead of sharpie marking them everyone can choose a color and a year range for marking. If we use ranges of 1983-86, 87-90, 91-94, 95-98, 99-02, and 03-07 then 6 different people can use the same paint color and it'll be easier to figure who's coin you have and where it came from.

I had toyed with the idea of marking the dump date on the reverse to see how long it takes to get them back but that may be too time consuming.

Anyways seems as though I'm out of yellow paint but still have several cans of green. I'll mark 2003-2006 coins with green paint for my dump batch tomorrow and from now on. I'll post some pics when they dry.

post what color and year you'll be using then if anyone gets a marked coin they can post it here and figure out who it came from.

Aha!

I see a familiar handle here JSutter.

Yes, I've wondered what the chances are of getting pre-sorted pennies back, but I think if I purchase pennies from one bank and deposit them at another that will eliminate the risk.

For the few I've done so far I've purchased the pennies in the town I live in and re-deposited them in the town I work in, about 40 miles away.

I'm guessing the banks don't do much penny swapping between themselves.

I have marked some with silver paint, and haven't seen them back, but I also carried some in my pockets and the paint wore off in a day or two.

I have seen a few halves with the blue marker on them.

I'll be marking mine using a permanent marker with a Green T on the front of each zinc penny.

The thing is that the majority of banks here use Brinks for their coin services and when I dump them they go in big clear plastic bags that I'm sure are going right back to Brinks to be sorted, rolled, and boxed. The banks don't do much rolling themselves they outsource it. so even though I'm dumping at Republic Bank the Brinks boxes I get at the other Republic branches, Fifth Third, and National City are all probably going right through the same hopper wherever Brinks sorts their coins for this region.

If I were rolling and returning them I'd assume the rolls would be well dispersed but dumping them through the Coinstar they're just going right back where I got them from.

Are you the JSUTTER on ebay that is selling them?I figure that is a Match, though I do have to laugh at the fact that you say it takes 8 hours to sort one box and you're not even hand sorting them.

I know well from experience it does take 8 hours to hand sort a box, I did a few boxes before I went ahead and got a Ryedale. I dreaded sorting them then, now it's fun. It says right in my auctions they are sorted with an electronic comparator.

i've marked a few of mine with some funky blue-green nail polish my old lady has. i dont expect to ever see them again. there are so many more pennies out there than halves that i dont think they will ever come back.

btw i can easily sort a $25 box in under an hour. most lots on ebay are going for way less than they should. i'll admit ive sold a couple lots, but i still think we should hold off for higher prices. theres no shortage of buyers now and there will be more when prices get higher and supplies get tighter.

Man if I can't sort a box in under 2 hrs I'd stop doing it.
8hrsx60 mins.= 480 mins/50 rolls so your saying it takes you approx. 10 mins a roll. That would be 12 seconds per penny, are you searching for doubled ear varieties on each coin with a magnifying glass too?
Just harassing you is all.

What if we did this: each region had a certain color they used (blue, West; red, Southcentral; ect). That way we not only see if we get our own back, but if we (how much) get other pennies from different regions.

As a matter of fact I was looking through them with a magnifying glass, lol

Sounds good Epaphras. I think if we had about 20 people marking them, with as many coins as we're circulating we'd start seeing them come back eventually. I always liked playing on WheresGeorge. I had quite a few bills I'd found and reported be reported again locally or in other states.

OOOOOOh, heres an idea. we can attach RFID chips to each penn...

That'll never work.

Blue sounds good to me. I started engraving some with an H in front of Lincoln's face today. I think I will set it up so that as I set them Free in the wild I will know which way I disposed of them. 2007 will be those I bagged up and turned in at the bank. 2006 will be those I rolled up and deposited at a bank. 2005 will be those I rolled up and spent.

I think this is the most useful idea proposed so far. It would be very interesting to see if there is any 'flux' in the coin supply.

But read my next post before anyone proceeds

But not sure it will work...I'm not going out and buying paint to do this.

Also...am I the only 'conspiracy theorist' of the group or has anyone else had any thoughts of how such 'tagging' could come back to bite us in the @ss ?

I don't know if I want 'shadow watchers' or "Brinks researchers" to be able to piggy back and use the data against us.... like cutting off our supply or drowning us with zincs or something.

Is that a danger? Should we have precautions?
Should we have a "Member"s only section on the forum? So only those who've posted so much can see it?

I don't know...just being overly cautious I'm sure.

Brinks is already flooding us with zinc.. And they cannot cut off my supply since I change it constantly. Even I don't know for sure where the next box of pennies is coming from.. though I I suspect it will be a couple of boxes from a drive by at an as yet unnamed bank this afternoon. I'm not worried.. they can't prove anything. Besides, only certain members here know who I really am. Anybody else just sees a guy from Northern CA that thinks he has a lot of pennies.
