You bought a proof US coin from some dude in Switzerland on Fleabay?
Hopefully it's not one of those special Chinese 1910 Barbers.
U should spend more time sorting coins and less time on Fleabay. |

Penny, what are those $50 bags? I realize they are the Canvas bags, but are they what the banks put the customer rolled-up coins in to send back to wherever? Derek |

Most self-service coin counters at banks and credit unions feed into heavy plastic bags that hold $50 in pennies. So I think most people sorting $50 bags are buying from those banks or credit unions. |

In the old days all the banks used to ship out customer coins loose in the $50 Canvas bags. Now most of the banks have switched over to the heavy duty plastic bags whether they have a counting machine or not. When they package them for shipment sometimes they are loose and sometimes they are still in the rolls, depending on the bank's internal policy regarding shipping and whether there is an additional internal charge if they are not broken out of the rolls. When a bank converts to all plastic for shipment they often have nice canvas bags sitting in a pile in the vault that you can get for free if they like you. I would love to start getting bags of loose coins from the banks. But none of the banks around here have counting machines and once they mark up a bag for shipment they don't want to reverse the paperwork and sell it to me. I use those heavy duty plastic bags to dump my zinc.. just hook it up to one of my high speed counting machines, set the batch stop for 5000 and let 'er rip. |

Yes, heavy duty plastic bag.... Hadn't thought to ask if they have any leftover canvas bags...will do that next time. Wow, wish local was getting 31%, guess I'll just have to be satisfied with ~24-25 % |

Sorting report for today
$50.00 (2 boxes) 1018 coppers=20.36% 2 dimes
Up 5.05% from yesterday. Highest percentage for this month. It's interesting I get my lowest and my highest percentage in consecutive days. And you all complain about 25% averages... |

Most banks at least around here, Collect the loose change they collect from costomers (Penny bank returns Etc.) into heavy plastic bags then they sell this bag to brinks or some other armored carrier, who then re rolls them and sells them back to the banks.
If you can buy them b4 they get sold to brinks you can get a $50 bag unsorted and easier to carry out of the bank... Most banks dont want admit that they have them or sell them (some banks are affraid you will learn the brinks schedule) but if you ask enough banks some will sell them to you.

Okay, explain this.... sorted a $25 box that clearly weighed a couple ounces LESS than 15 lbs. But it's copper % was almost exactly 28%... while my other full 15lb boxes only give about 24-26%. A lighter box, producing more copper... or my math is awful? First 10 rolls of a full 15lb box gave about a 20% yield. and two wheats. |

Thinner plastic or paper. Thinner box. Canadians in the copper percentage? Some short rolls? You accidently included a few extra rolls in batch. You forgot to clear the counter. |

All the real coins I bought in the auction at one of my coin club meetings. I belong to a few coin clubs and it is amazing the stuff that turns up in the auctions sometimes. |

1 bag sorted tonight
I decided since I was short on time and my daughter cant help since she has a friend over (friend! over pennies? Hmmm!) I might as well sort the bag that has the most shiny pennies.. I figure I'll get the bad percentage out of the way!
here is the results
5000 sorted
ONLY 7 wheat (all 50's)
BUT GET THIS!
2,346 Copper!!!! (46.9%)
It had the most shiny old pennies I have ever seen in one bag... since I sort the ones out that are extra shiny into a seperate bucket (dont ask me why... I just like shiny objects) I couldnt keep up... It is the first time I used my counter to count the pretty ones (I normally get about the same as wheat)
Half way through my copper sort I stopped the ryedale to make sure I had it set properly. lol
guess you can't judge a book by its cover!
OK, Maybe I can find time to go and sort one (or two) more bags tonight!

Was only able to get in 20 minutes of sorting tonight.. was told I was making too much noise.
Sorting Report for today: 5,000 coins - 2 Boxes 825 Copper 16.50% - Not quite as good as PennyProspector, but at least there were no dud boxes today.
Had good luck on a driveby at a new bank today. Got 2 boxes from them with no problem, and I don't even have an account there. The trick is you just walk up there like you belong there, go to the merchant teller and tell her you need 2 boxes of pennies and lay your money on the counter. They didn't even ask if I had an account. |
