How are you storing the hoard?
I currently have 4 gal pails I've been getting from local donut store every week. They hold about 150 lbs each. Have lids...I pack tight so I can stack them and have lid support the stack. I have these on a pallet in a 3 x 4 pail foot print...I stack only 2 high...that makes just under 2 tons...the limit of my import pallet jack....so i can move around garage for cleaning.
Plan on switching to 55 gal drum on a pallet.....one drum should hold 1 ton.
My current pace is to sort $600 per week...assume copper still runs about 30%....thus hoard $180/week....that's about $9,000/year....which is about 3 tons per year.
I plan on hoarding at least 10 tons (2 more years) ...perhaps 20 tons (5 or 6 years)... |

Every so often on this forum, I see people talking about tons of pennies. What I always wonder is what kind of tons everybody is using? I always figured pennies should be referred to by the metric ton, but maybe I am wrong on that. My reasoning is that copper prices are commonly either quoted by the pound or by the metric ton (a metric ton of copper is currently about $7092) Thoughts?

I'd like to see pennies measured in troy tons, but that's just me. |

Today was a pretty good coin buying day.
Started off with 80 rolls of customer wrapped dimes and 50 rolls customer wrapped nickels from the same bank that gave me a bag of loose pennies earlier this week. Then they asked if I would like some quarters also. So I got a brand new box of 50 rolls of South Dakota quarters. They also gave me 2 free canvas bank bags to haul the dimes and nickels out in. I gotta hit this bank more often.. I love those free bank bags.
Later today I stopped off at a branch of my main bank to replenish cash for my weekly penny pickup at another bank. They surprised me.. they had 200 rolls of customer wrapped pennies for me.
Then I went to my other bank to pick up my regular weekly shipment from them. Guess they had a bit of a run on pennies today.. they only had 4 boxes for me. I was cool with it. Maybe they will give me some extra boxes next week. Pretty sure I'm not gonna run out this weekend.
Even found a free range penny in the parking lot of the bank.. zinc of course.
Got 4 more rolls of pennies, 5 rolls of nickels and 5 rolls of dimes from the daily Loomis coin drop at work. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |

I am collecting in different parts of Toronto. Check out the older neighbourhoods.
It's true about SW Ontario. I tried buying some in Guelph but they were pretty dry. Are you in London?
Also--two rolls of quarters, but only 13 .999 Ni = about 16% |

Windsor, Sarnia and a little around London. There is a pretty serious guy in London...and London is a distribution hub to Sarnia and Windsor...so, he has the system cleaned pretty dry of .999Ni 5 Cents. I've also noticed the Copper Penny Percent is now down to about 35%...was near 50% a year ago...I wonder if the Alloy Recovery Program is hitting the Copper Pennies heavily? |

My buying report on pennys are not that great this week. I bought 10 boxs of penny from serval banks. Lots of them are all brand new 2007 and 2008 denver pennys. I got flooded with about 6 boxs of brand new coins. Since my penny set builds and copper hoarding is not going be much this week since I flooded with new coins.
Since banks were flooded with pennys were flooded with new coins. I bought 2 boxs of halfs and found 12 silver and bought 8 boxs of nickels and 1 box quarters since I am short on pennys to play with.
Its sad I hit 6 banks totol and its seems all I got was brand new 2007 or 2008 pennys. Its seems in town where live all Fedboxs are brand new coins it seems on pennys. I live north of houston texas. Loomis and brinks are flooding banks with 2007 and 2008 denver pennys big time.
This week I have 4 boxs of totol of old pennys to play with. I never seen anything like it on brand new coins . Last year I would buy maybe 10 to 20 boxs worth pennys and onley get 1 brand 2007 denver box on an rare deal. All last year I got two 2007 denver boxs totol.
Ow well in houston texas we are flooded with 2008 and 2007 cents.

I love those fed boxes and hoard up pre 64 silver coins such as rolls of 64 half dollers. Maybe copper will be very expensive such as silver is. |

Stopped by the bank to cash in my 80 rolls of clad dimes I got yesterday. Got 2 boxes of pennies and 1 box of nickels. And, as luck would have it they were having a customer appreciation day.. so I got 2 free hot dogs! |
