I recently have become aware that in 1983 errors occurred when the mint accidentally used copper stock. So, there are apparently 1983 copper cents out there that may have a high collector value. Has anyone run into these that they are aware of, perhaps using the sorting machine?

Might be a 1983 Copper in there....I never search my copper hoard....just pack it away....don't even look for the wheats. Doubt I'll ever look through the hoard....probably will sell it someday to someone that might....unless it just goes to the scrap metal dealer.

Specific date/feature hunting is a lot of work. I don't have time for that now...

$50 Brinks

28.9% copper
28 wheats, including a 1914.
And once again, the rock doves flock to me---2 '67 Canadian doves, one of which is XF.
1 Panama penny

Overall a good batch. Few dirty coins, and lots of red/orange color remaining in coppers.

Well, it finally happened. I got my first dud box of pennies. I used to read about it happening to other members and be glad it had never happened to me. Nobody in my town crazy enough to sort pennies. But this morning I picked up 2 boxes from one of my banks and they were both solid zinc!

Fortunately I didn't spend a lot of time unrolling them and sorting them. When I opened the boxes I could see that the pennies were machine rolled. And guess what.. they used the same rolling paper I do. Hey, these were actually my pennies! I deposited these 2 boxes a couple of weeks ago. Thought they would be long gone by now. I never got my own pennies back before. I fixed it though.. I walked next door and deposited them in a bank that hardly ever gives me pennies anymore. Now I know they don't have any more of my pennies so I will pick up a couple of fresh boxes from them tomorrow or the next day.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Back when I machine rolled (now I just dump loose)...I would mark the end and top of my boxes with a ZMMDDYY Code...today would be Z013108. I did it in sharpie so it was easy to see....never got my own back that way...probably passed on 40 or 50 of my own boxes over 7 months...saved a lot of frustration.

Quick Brinks box sort last night. Didn't really have time, but I made some....

629 Cu
25.2%

Since I have a Ryedale, I only search for older wheats on my resort. I leave the rest in with the coppers. I don't sell any coppers, so the wheats just wait for a future hand sort. If I see a wheat come out of the copper chute, I'll grab it though. Sometimes I take a bunch of coppers over to my little sister and she loves to search for them I give her most that she finds. Trying to give her the bug....

Deal

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

Be careful what you wish for---you just might get it. I got my girlfriend involved in penny sorting, and now she's driving me crazy! She's like the boy who cried wolf. Every roll she opens she yells out, "I found an Indian Head!" or better yet "I found a flying eagle!" Of course I examine the penny just to double check. It's usually just a copper. What's ironic is that she actually has found a few Indian Head pennies, but now she's killing her credibility, driving me crazy, and loving every minute of it!

Finally able to get some more sorting done, since my carpal tunnel issues.

1-28-08
$65.00 sorted
956 copper
4 Canadian
5 Wheats
3 Dimes
1 Indian Head (my first one yet, 1903, and it's a beauty)
14.71 percent copper; right at average for my area

Near the end of last year I sold off my copper hoard to a local coin dealer for 1.5x face, he thought he should hold some for speculation. So now I'm going to try and ramp up production but build my hoard back up. I'm at the point now where I can dump $600 in zinc a week without a problem; I'll just have to step up my game to source $700+ per week. We'll see how it goes.

M.M. - Are you hand sorting several hundred per week? Or are you in the "Ryedale" club?

I'll be getting my Ryedale membership card shortly after I get my tax return. I can manage to hand sort about $150 to $200 a week if I'm working at my job 80-90 hours a week.

Sorted 1 - $25 Brinks Box of CRW

I was a little concerned that I would have junk in this box, since most people don't bring their rolls in Brinks Boxes. No cause for concern as it was a nice percentage of copper.

I had a 1983 penny that was beautifully struck and in AU condition. It was a very deep mint strike like you see in most coppers. I thought it was a copper, but knew it couldn't be one since it was 1983. I heard about the 1983 coppers about a week after turning this coin back to the bank. At the time I didn't have my Ryedale or a scale. It would have been worth it to have the equipment. I have since learned better not to turn anything back that I think is unusual, and do some homework on it.

Please note: The Ryedale will only pull it out into the coppers. You have to visually check the dates of the coppers for 1983. I check the dates of any newer looking coins that appear in the copper batches, so I will catch it again if it happens.

Sorted 2 - $25 Brinks Boxes-Sealed

I did have a penny covered in crud. I cleaned the crud off with distilled water and a cloth. I got all the crud off and behold a 1943 copper penny. I quickly took it upstairs to my magnifier, with doubts that it really was a 1943 copper, to find the last digit was an 8 that was badly worn on the left side and looked like a 3. It really looks like a 3 with the naked eye.
