Forgive me if this isn't the proper thread for this, I really don't want to attract any more attention to this than I already have though, hopefully that makes sense. Here's my silver santa story from last week, enjoy!
I dumped some zinc and halves and went out to play a bit mid-day Friday. I needed to send out some $ for a used Ryedale, but thought I would play w/ the paper a bit before turning it into a money order. So I went into a small town bank that I hadn't been in before. Although it was Friday, there were no other customers in there, which seemed odd to me. There were two tellers, I asked the one if I could buy $100 worth of halves. She went to the vault and brought a large canvas bag out. It appeared to be more than $500, which is a bit odd in my experience. (It seems busier banks will usually ship them out once they hit $500 in a bag in my experience... Or, they'll have smaller amounts which are easier for the tellers to carry.) Anyway, she started hand counting them out in front of me. I see what I think is silver in the top of the bag, and told her I'd take $200 if buying more made it easier for her to rationalize utilizing their counter. (I really didn't want her to notice a bunch of silver if I could help it.) She drops a few halves taking them out to put in the counter, and I hear what I believe to be that desirable "ting" - so I up my order again. I tell her that I'd planned on hitting a few more banks on the way to my destination, so why don't I just buy the whole bag. She said the tag on the bag says $625, but she would still like to count them first. "Oh great" I think - but what can I do...lol. The machine count comes up $624.50, at which point I should have offered to pay $625 and cut my time losses, but hindsight is always 20/20. She calls the other teller over, and they confer. They finally decide to count it again. At which point the count is $580.... *Sighs* (Guess they forgot some somewhere...they were using a variety of containers as the machine filled up quickly.) Regardless, by this time, I'm starting to question the amount too. Teller #1 again consults with Teller #2, and they decide Teller #1 will hand-count it. My worst fear comes down in spite of my best effort! She's counting quietly, but still out loud & within earshot. (She ended up announcing about 6 different totals before it's all said and done!) But I’m getting ahead of myself here. She starts out counting one dollar at a time, so I suggest making stacks. She said she doesn't trust stacks and drives on with counting one dollar at a time... So I'm visiting w/ the other teller a bit, asked about Eisenhowers and 2010 pennies, along w/ some other small talk. (During which point Teller #1 switches to stacks I might add.) Pretty soon Teller #1 announces $300, then shortly thereafter verbally berates herself for mis-counting.... At that point, Teller #2 moves in to help (getting off the CPU where we were visiting in front of). They have their backs to me, but it seems like there is a pretty good # of silver edges when I can see the stacks - but I never trust my color vision or my hearing for that matter. My hearing is shot from many years of big things going bang in the service, and I'm technically color blind so I don't really trust my ears or my eyes for that matter. Pretty soon teller #2 announces, fairly loudly, there are "Eisenhowers" in here, followed shortly thereafter by "some of these are silver you know!" I mumbled something about perhaps that would get the boys excited to help me date-search them. (I always go the coin collector route.) But I'm cringing at this point, hoping the other 4 folks in the bank are out of earshot. At which point another woman walks in from outside, and joins the tellers at the counter after putting her coat in what appears to be her office. She's hovering, and hand-picking coins off the top and looking at them. At this point, everything is stacked up, and the final "totals" are being discussed. The newcomer to the countertop piles doesn't say anything, and helps Teller #1 add the piles to the bag. Although her lack of talk during all of this seemed to imply she knew what they were selling, although again, at this point I strongly suspected there was silver, but had no idea how much. Final total they came up with was $620, and a good 45 minutes after I walked in, I left w/ the bag. Another customer finally came in while they were adding the coins to the bag for the final time. What resulted was a "dream bag" - there was $198.50 in silver in the bag, $44.50 of which was 90%. There were eleven "Eisenhowers" in the bag - er - I mean Franklins. :-) Oh yea, there was actually $623.50 total in the bag. (Figures!) However, my accounting victory was short-lived, as my next dump bank shorted me ~$20 in the count...lol. Happy hunting everyone!

Great story JJM. I rarely find loose halves in bags that are not $1000 incriments. I did find one once while road tripping in the panhandle of Florida. The bank had a canvas bag and the teller didnt know how much was in it. He took the bag to the back to run through the counter and had me all nervous. Came out to a bit over $950 so I took it home and expected to find something. Found 1 40%... |

Hello all.. I just joined a few days ago. I have gotten bit by the bug pretty bad.. I hit a few banks in a small town I was visiting for work on 3/4/10
$40.00 BWR halves 4 40% er's 1967 (3), 1968 (1) Then I got cut off for not being a customer
Hit a CU and picked up $100.00 BWR Halves Skunked..
Hit a teller window in a grocery store and she said she did not have any rolls but she had about $15.00 loose. I said ok I'll take those.. She started stacking and counting and I could hear the silver. It yielded 19 40%. 1966 (2), 1967 (7), 1968 (6), 1969 (4)
Then I hit a Casino for $50.00 in halves and it yielded 1 40% 1966
I got back into town last night and hit my local branch and the teller told me she did not have any rolls but that she had a few loose in her drawer. I asked her how much and she grabbed the stack and started sorting. I noticed the back of 1 of them and saw the perched eagle. She told me $4.00 and I took them. I got out into the car and checked them.
3 90% out of 8 halves!!
1 1945 Walker 1 1951 Franklin 1 1964 Kennedy
Then I picked up $100.00 in BWR from another branch and got skunked in silver but did find a 1972-S Proof and a 1972-D Grease strike..
So for just starting to search for not quite a week I am up to (24) 40% and (3) 90%!!

Unless you tell me otherwise, I'm going to estimate that your $250 piggy bank had $50 nicks, $150 quarters, and $50 dimes in it. |

Hey Country, Thanks for the hard work. It looks like have been credited for too many silver halves. My total for silver halves so far is 17 and not 27. I wish I had 27. I am not sure if my post made things a little confusing but I will make them much clearer from here on out. I'm glad to be a part of this fun hobby. There is nothing like purchasing silver at face value!!

Work has picked up so my sorting time has gone down. This TX boy finds himself in downtown Philadelphia. There seems to be an average of 2.3 banks per block. I finally got to do some teller mining durning lunch today. Out of 8 banks only 1 had halves. The one sold me $33.50 in halves. It was worth the effort. 2 68s, 1 67, 1 66, & 1 64 |
