Good topic. I have told a few people, but mostly they're friends at church who already believe that the prophesies in the Book of Revelation is likely to be fulfilled in our lifetime. They sell me their change at face value. I use the tack that I'll count and give them face value, which is better than taking a coinstar gouging.
I must say that teaching people about PM saving is not unlike evangelism, where you share the message to people blinded by the fiat paper pushers of this age. Only those who discern and take action on the news you share will be saved, uh, economically. ;-) |

Yeah, I tell everyone i know. I also tell every teller i meet about the silver they may be able to collect. I figure it never hurts to make friends with the people that will be doing your ordering for you. |

When bank tellers ask my reason for buying coins, I'll sometimes mention older coins or silver but I usually don't say anything about saving base metal coins. It's not that I'm trying to keep it a secret, more that most of them seem to think of it as a dull hobby. If someone shows a real interest in the topic then I'm more likely to go into detail. |

I just think its funny that we all get together on this forum and discuss our penny hoarding habits like we're discussing the weather, but most of us won't even mention a peep about what we do in the real world to even close people around us, even people we trust in other aspects of our lives. According to the masses, we are the crazy penny people, but in reality, we are probably the most sane group of folks out there. |

My family knows that I do SOMETHING with pennies and think I have pretty much lost my mind. However, one Granddaughter and my 3 year old Grandson love to help me when they come to visit. The bank tellers know I get lots of pennies but never ask why. On occassion someone will ask me what I do with all those pennies and I tell them but they really have no idea what the purpose is. That is ok, I will just keep hoarding, sorting and collecting for future use. |

Well, let's see, I have about 400 customers registered on my website, and I mailed out ads to the top 500 or so customers from my previous website... |

I have no idea how many people know this about me. I mention it to people from time to time, but usually only after they get to know me pretty well. I don't want to scare them off right out of the box now? I imagine it may not be a good idea to give out hints to your hoard size if its relatively large, who knows to what extents some will go when they can't put food on the table. I can't seem to fight the urge to show off my copper boxes though when someone comes over that I feel even remotely might take interest. It almost feels like a trophy for all my hard work and accomplishment.

I voted zero. Not counting the good people here. My wife and daughter think that i just look for certain pennies and return the rest, not realizing that I have over $500 of copper pennies hidden in the basement. If I tell her, all she would to is b%$#h anout me making a mess in the basement. This way everyone is happy. |

I probably voted too low! I'm guessing for the vast majority of people on the forum sorting pennies, halves, nickels and/or hoarding some along the way, view this activity as more of a hobby versus just a pure investment strategy. No doubt, however, others treat this as a sideline business. Regardless, we all seem to have fun at "it" which is important! |

You bet. Less knowledge to others is more power to us. Boy...that sounds bad doesn't it. It sounded better in my head. Oh well. |

except for the forum, my wife and two sons know and that's it. I probably am a bit paranoid but when it comes to coinage that is being hoarded, in the present moral climate in this country, the less that know anything about things like that, the better (IMHO )

My immediate family knows, but other than ya'll that's it. People at work know that I collect coins, and know a little about them, but that's all I let out. I don't like to give up specific info as I've been robbed in the past and do not want to go through that again. |
Are you throwing that out? |

Well up until this post, it was way less than 5....but... This is my 'coming out' party! LOL So now I guess it is way more than 5 if all of you are counted. I thought I had died and gone to heaven when I found this place and realised that I am NOT Alone in my obsession! Ha I have been sorting for a long time. It is going to be so much fun to join others with the same hobby!! TextTextText |

I ask for change returned in pennies. I just tell them I collect old pennies. My favorite teller at the bank got interested and saved copper cents for me. I used a carrot to enlist her help. One day I walked in with the latest Red Book. Told her I would give one to her for her help. That got everyone at the bank interested! They would leave that book on the break room table and everyone would compare what they found. The copper pennies I got back more than paid for the Red Book.
I got to know the president of a large multi-state metal scrap company. He looked at me as if I lost my mind when I told him about my copper penny hoarding scheme. |

Only my fellow copper cronnies here. I tell the tellers I search for old cents for a collection and a kind of therapy. They pretty much believe this when they give me my box and in my best Mr. Burns voice, rub my hands together and say, "Exxxcellenttt!!". |
