Poll Question:
Kirkland's topic on running into his dump bank teller got me thinking about how many people I personally know that are aware of my copper penny hoarding hobby. Of course my wife and a select few family members know along with just 2 close friends. Everyone else wouldn't understand and probably think i'm crazy. So for me, I would say around 5 people. What about you? do you keep your hoarding secret from your friends and family? or do you tell everyone you speak with about it? Do you "omit some facts" to tellers about what you do with the pennies? If you tell people you "collect pennies" or "looking for wheats" then these people do not count. They must be someone who knows your are mining copper and at what scale you are doing it. When I refer to "persons" in the poll below, I am refering to any friends, family, bank tellers, co-workers or any people you interact with in person on a regular basis. Please do not include internet friends or forum members, because we all know what we do.

I'm curious to see how many of us share our hobby in the real world and how many try to keep their hoarding "under the radar".

Choices:

Not a single person
5 People or less
6-10 People
11-20 People
21-50 People
More than 50 people
I tell everyone I know
I tell everyone, even people I don''t know

Spouse and children are the only ones that know.

I have gone to the extent of putting a note in each full bucket of pennies that spells out why I hoarded in the first place, quantity of each bucket and the face value. I mention the face value versus "melt value" and go on to say that if the time comes to off load my hoard, whoever gets that task needs to check into if the melt ban was lifted, going rate on ebay or even this forum. Don't just dump based on face value.

The note is so if I'm not around they will know what to do and not just think I was over the edge when they find a few hundred thousand.

Over the edge, that's a whole other story.

You're kidding, right?

Other than this forum and my neighbor coppernicus, nobody knows of my CRH and hoarding activities. Nobody, not even family. A few tellers think I'm just looking for Wheats, Buffalos and Mercuries. The rest of them don't know or seem to care why I'm always buying large quantities of coin.

As innocent and harmless as it may seem telling a close friend or family member, people talk. Sooner or later you and your hobby will come up in an innocent conversation with somebody you told, then that person will bring it up with somebody in another conversation. And so on and so on...

Then you have the dregs of society eventually knowing about your stuff. I almost had to learn that the hard way with my guns years ago...

My family and a few friends at school. I have my mom keeping all her change and giving it to me and even my little cousin gave about 75 coppers that he found around the house.

My significant other only, but only cause she lives with me and see's what I do. She has a big mouth, and has probably told a few others, but I tell nobody.

I voted saying that between 20-50 people know because the people that I deal with in the banks & credit unions know that I save all the copper pennys that I can get plus everybody here so the number might actually be higher.

Nice. Yes. Very nice.

I'd say about 6 to 8 close friends and family members know what I'm doing. I've even gotten a few to start keeping their copper pennies and (Yes Ponce) nickels. However, only my wife knows exactly what I've got. I'm far more careful about my silver coins. The trick is to encourage others that you care about to buy PMs and accumulate (not hoard!) copper pennies/ nickels, without tipping your hand.

I have told a few family members, some people at work (I work in a place where copper prices are closely followed, so most people "get it" although they don't see how any real money can be made). No one seems to think it is worthwhile, but every time I ask to sort through the pennies they have around and then turn around and offer a quarter or some such for face value in coppers, they instantly ask for at least 1.5x face! Hah, I always throw them back with the others and tell them to sort their own!

Grandpa always told me, "Back in 1964..." I listened.

A few thousand if you count the people that read my articles. A handful of family and friends, and none of them know how much I have. heck I don't know how much I have.

I take a $20 box of loose sorted coppers to work every day. When I get a minute here or there I look through them for wheaties. I'm sure I'm not going to win any converts to mining, but a couple of coworkers now want to help search when I get the box out. They get all excited when they find one with the "wheat thingies" on the back. The other day one mentioned "you must be a millionaire, to have all those pennies." Wouldn't that be nice? If $20 equalled a million? Maybe if we get Zimbabwe type hyperinflation we could all be billionaires

Hoard now and hold on!

I voted 11-20 people.

That may not be quite accurate according to your standards because you said: "and at what scale you are doing it."
I almost always play it down. Most people don't get it at all, but 'eh, just something I do when I have time,' seems to compute with them easier than "I'M PUTTING AWAY ALL THAT I CAN GET MY HANDS ON!"

Family and a few close friends know that I do it 'a lot'. But I doubt any of them know that I have maybe 250lbs worth of copper pennies.

Though I've told a few of the $500 face of copper that I sold before I moved out of Indiana. They are impressed that I got nearly $250 profit from them.

If anyone at all knows it, then there is a 99% chance that the world knows it.Just like prepping food and supplies for an emergency, if only one person knows it and people get hungry, you'll have plenty of people showing up on your door step.

the real rich won't sort pennies and the real poor can't, they both think penny sorting people are crazy.

I have decided to keep it to myself lately. Smart people do not need to be told. Those ignorant of history usually choose to be that way. When they get blindsided it will be the best education they ever got.

Only about 10-15 know That I sort. They are all co-workers, and do to the nature of my work and my past year, they are all transiant through my life. (3-6 months) I also have told them all that I sell all of the copper that I sort. The only person who has any real idea is my girlfriend; unless she has told someone without telling me.

I deal with the public all day, and they have become my defacto army of coin gatherers. I still go to banks, but just to buy CWR's. When I'm taking money from people at work, and they are fumbling for change in their own purse-sized hoards, I say "you can dump all your pennies if you want, I collect them!" Some people look at me like I was the second coming after saying that.
KA-CHING!
The more people who know you as "the coin guy", the more chances of getting some serious percentages. I fully understand people being secretive about the subject for fear of ridicule/robbery. However, I have little shame in retiring early, and that is exactly what I'll do if I keep this up. That is what keeps me going, every penny and nickel brings retirement closer. Steal my pennies and I'll steal your ability to walk! I also "cache" my pennies (and all bullion) in seperate geographic locales in case of a G.O.O.D scenario, I sure as hell wont be carrying 400 lbs of pennies.

Oh and I forgot the sweet old lady who GAVE me a bag full of silver (80% canadian coins) because I was the only one she knew who was interested in them. She got pleasure I'm sure in giving them to someone who would appreciate them rather than their snotty kids who would pawn it at the first opportunity or *gasp* spend it at face value in ignorance.
(I tried to pay her, but she wouldn't let me)

I have told no one about saving copper, and only a select handful know anything about me having silver, and even fewer of them know about hunting banks for that silver. I think I'll keep it that way.

My family knows and we fit nicely. One Brother thinks the way to be ready is to save wheat and seeds, another brother thinks the way is to save guns, another to save cows. I save metals. We all think the others are nuts, but in the end we hope we can make a go together.

Silver Monometalism is the most permanent and stable form of money the world has seen. Natural law and history prove silver value is best multiplied by gold and best divided by copper. It is only in this counterfeit currency time when the natural law appears suspended.

My wife and her parents and a couple of friends. She likes to talk but she understands that everyone doesn't need to know what the true motivation is. We are "officially" just coin collectors. She actually enjoys sorting through the coppers to find wheats and other treasures so that story is kind of true. She picked up a box yesterday and is going back for more today at her employer's CU.
