At first I thought I was looking at 1969 lincoln with above average wear, but then close inspection with my eyepiece confirmed it was 1909 (and a VDB to boot when I flipped it over). What a nice way to start the new year !

Recently, I have not been finding many wheats (maybe 2 or 3 per thousand). At this time last year, I was finding ten times as many.

Nice find. I'm hoping to find my first one soon. I found a 1909 the other day but not VDB.

And you're searching out of Canada. That fact is what makes this that much better. Nice job indeed.

JobIII,

Exactly, I am quite surprised to find a 1909 VDB penny here in Canada. Last year, I have also found a 1895 Indian head penny, a 1942 Mercury dime, 1947, 1957, 1963 and 3 x 1964 Roosevelt dimes and a 1943 war nickel.

I really wouldn't mind searching copper cents up in Canada maybe once a year or something. I just don't have bank accounts and a way to return the zincs. But all this talk makes me eager to venture north

Over summer I will probably be visiting up in Michigan. At some banks they sort the Canadian coinage out and you can buy the rolls.

With all the nice stories of silver halves I see on this board, I tempted to visit some US banks real soon.

I will say that I have found two of what I think you Canadians call "George V pennies" which are I think equivalent to our wheat pennies. One of them had toothpaste or something all over it but the other was rather nice looking.

Did they even make pennies in 1909? I heard that they did, but I have not found one yet.

Congrats on your find

Yes, they made pennies in 1909. It was the first year of the Lincoln Wheats.

Last year I found two in one roll and one of them has a die error.

Major congrats, 1945V. I found a 1909VDB myself the same week I found my first Indian Head! It really makes the hobby fun, doesn't it??

I just noticed that you list your location as Canada. Are you living near the border and hopping across to pick up pennies?

Nickelless,

Actually I am in the Montreal region about 1 hour away from the US border. I have not been to a US bank yet, I have found all my US coins in circulation in the local Canadian banks.

I was just showing the coin to my son and we both remarked that it is a 100 year coin that has been in circulation all that time until now.

It is pretty amazing, isn't it? My first IH was an 1887--12 years before my great-grandfather was born! When I saw that penny drop into the zinc pile from my Ryedale, I think the whole neighborhood heard me yell!

Just curious, do you go into banks asking if they have any American coins, or do you just find them in general circulation?

Nickelless,

You can buy American bills at any Canadian bank, but never American coins.

I find all my American coins mixed in the Canadian rolls.
The ratio can be as high 10% on average. Although, I have found 100% rolls of American pennies, nickels and dimes on occasion.
