Since 1995, I've had You must be logged in to see this link.

I quit my day-job 4 years ago.

I dabble in day-trading penny stocks, and smoke meat, like ribs, briskets & bacon, as a hobby.

Initially, I was a Diver Medic. Worked the decompression chamber or was in it when an oil field diver got the bends. It didn't take me long to figure out it was better toown their stock than work for them.

After, I went into the YMCA as a Physical Director. Unfortunatly, our executive director was keeping two sets of books. The IRS came one day and chain locked the doors.

Now in my 20th year as an Athletic Trainer. I take care of athletes before, during and after they get injured. Right now the industry is finally getting up to speed on concussions, as in "hit your head~get brain damage". Now go back out there and walk it off.

I've been a cable locator for the past 19 years. Finding buried phone, power, gas and catv lines and marking them with paint and flags. I understand Mcprice302's concern about drilling into buried utilities and causing a service outage or worse. I pride myself on having very few damages over the years. I have a friend who says what I do is leagalized graffiti.

Actually the main part of my job is as an Accountant for the garbage company. Somebody has to crunch all those numbers. The business unit I am responsible for has a MRF, a Landfill, and 2 Transfer Stations.. as well as an energy producing Methane plant. The division I work the most on is the MRF.. which is called a Materials Recovery Facility. This is where all the recycleable materials go to be sorted, baled, and sold. We also have a buyback center on site for purchasing cans and bottles from the public. In addition to doing the accounting, I do inventory control, negotiate deals for commodities with brokers, shedule shipments, track all incoming and outgoing loads to the facility, track open bookings to make sure they are filled on time, and send pictures and packing lists to the brokers when a booking is completed. In my spare time I sort a few pennies. The MRF is kind of like penny sorting.. just on a little larger scale. I ship out over 900 tons of material every week.. and you'all know how I like to do things "ByTheTon"

My wife works for a utility locating service here in New England. They only do the cable/fiber side of it. She screens emails and finds out if the address has overhead or underground lines. Pretty cake job, and pays accordingly.

Thanks for coming clean.
Because of my job I'm at the transfer station daily(small town).
No scavanging allowed! We just dump in a big pile and the material is pushed into containers and hauled to the landfill.

They have finally wised up an hired a guy to pick the metal out of peoples dumps(I know that sounds gross).
For years, I thought to myself: "how can you just bury all this metal".

Our town could probably use a guy like you.

The waste disposal industry has changed quite a bit over the years. Heck.. we are generating electricity and selling it to the utility company just by using the methane gas coming off the landfill.

Any time I start to feel good about my job.. the gf reminds me.. "You know, you go to work in garbage every day." Of course mostly I just sit in my air conditioned office and bang on the computer.

Hoard

You should feel good about your job.

You probably are developing very valuable consulting knowledge.

I understand what you say. It is changing fast. You know there are very valuable and lightly used commodities disposed of, and the recovery business is defintely growing. My town is just starting to catch a clue. There's good junk dumped here. It makes me sick

Did you know Mexico City has about 1 million people who derive their income(however modest) from the dump.

Edit: P.S. What's the wierdest thing you've had to deal with, dumped at one of your station's?

I actually do feel good about my job. Recycling is definately a good thing. There are actually folks in the US that make their living just off what they can pick up and turn in for cash.

Weirdest thing was probably a human skull that came across our recycling line. That really messed things up. We had to shut the entire line down and call the sheriff.. lost about half a days production. We get dead cats on the line all the time.. but we don't have to call the sheriff for those. I don't know why folks think they can recycle cats once their nine lives are up.

Maybe we can get a group buy price on that jerky. I am good for 4 or 5 pounds just for myself. I'll bet it is a lot better than the store brand stuff too.

I know were getting off the thread subject.

But in the Prescott Transfer station, you can dump your animals it's gross.

About three years ago someone dumped a human body wraped in carpet. You gotta understand, The transfer station is only about 1/4 acre.

That was a big deal.

It is always a big deal when a human body gets dumped. You would think the idiots would realize it would most likely get discovered when they went to transfer it to a landfill. We actually have supervisors up top on our transfer stations to make sure no unauthorized materials (such as human bodies or hazardous waste) are being dumped with the load.
