Dang! I slept through both the new episodes last night! I saw Chum put that shocker on his head, then I was "lights out". Now I'm going to have to wait for the Thursday reruns...

By the way I would say that it is tempting to get my post counter up to 100 just for the sake of it. That's because our little avatars get stars based on our profligacy. I've never seen that before and IMHO it sets up the temptation.

It's a shame that anyone would alter any coin and try to get away with it. Bad karma in my opinion. I think reproduction coins are okay as long as they are marked accordingly. It gives a collector that can't afford the real ones a chance to fill in a collection. I purchased a few SS Republic Shipwreck coins that are replicas. If I was going to buy any coin over $200, I would go with slabbed. Caveat emptor.

On Pawn Stars, did you see that guy bring in 5 pounds of stamps? I can't believe they were not worth anything. Coins are where its it. Almost anything made of paper seems to go thru the hot phase like stamps, baseball cards and comic books then just averages out. Not to say they are worthless things to own, but not much investment potential. I still collect them though.

Another thing I like about the show is the variety of vintage items that come thru the shop and the stories behind them. I started watching American Pickers, they find some neat stuff tucked away in old barns. Wouldnt be surprised if there were a few old coins that fell under the seats of some of them old cars. I know thats where I would be checking ;)

Yeah saw the stamps too. From what I saw and from what I know of stamps, there wasn't anything of value. Just common stuff from the WW2 era. Stamps were first minted around 1846 and the ones throughout the rest of that century have some value, as well as other certain issues from the 20th century. I used to collect those myself, but quit a long time ago. Still pretty neat with the history of it, though.

That American Pickers show is quite interesing. I'm surprised at some of the values on items that look old and beat up (like the Vespa). That would be a dream job to go around to old barns like that and haggle with the owners, and then turn them for a profit to collectors.

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

As with any collectible, the person collecting it ought to authentically enjoy it. That's the only SAFE investment. And especially with stuff like 99.99% of stamps, it is almost the ONLY investment potential. Yet so many people want to buy something hot and sit on it for a few years and retire on the profits. I want to ask them, did you even enjoy collecting it? Sigh.

I used to think the same thing. My dad has dealt with vintage cars my whole life. When I was a kid I would help him clean out an old 40's or 50's car that he brought home, and tell him how awesome it would be to find a silver quarter. To which he said, "Forty years ago, if someone dropped a quarter, they noticed it. And then they dug until they found it." Shot a hole in my dream. Never did find anything great... a lot of dirty pennies, but never even a common wheat.

I collected stamps as a kid and I agree it should just be enjoyed for the hobby it is. That guy thought he had a million dollar stamp in there.

Good point about finding anything more than a quarter from back then, just goes to show how times have changed. Not even a wheat? Oh man, maybe you will get one in change soon. I got one cent back from change in the DC airport recently and wouldn't you know it was a wheat cent.

Well, yeah I do get wheats sometimes. My wife works at Wal-Mart as a cashier and gets a wheat almost every day she works. but I never found one while cleaning out an old 40's 50's 60's car. And I did a lot of that growing up.

Finally found the new episodes on Youtube...

So yeah, I watched the episode in question. I really had a hard time believing that lady saved that quarter for 28 years before ever checking its authenticity. If she knew it was an MS-65 example, then surely she had heard of the slabbing services? Didn't pass the sniff test.

By the way, that double-barrel coach gun was really cool!

I think Pawn Stars is a great show and have not missed one episode since it started. I did catch last night's show about the "32-S" quarter. Its sad that she did not have the real deal because she got that quarter in change and held on to it for so long. But like Rick said its still worth $3, lol.

The sad thing with that quarter is that it would be worth $50-$75 or more in that condition if they hadnt altered it. Maybe some collector of counterfeits will pay a premium for it still but they ruined that one.

He's hilarious. Some of my favorite Chumlee moments...

1) When he asked the autograph expert lady why she was shining a flashlight on the baseball she was authenticating

2) When he started hitting on the cute redhead wanting to sell the piano because she was going overseas

3) He was talking about pay, and mentioned hourly and commissionly...lol

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

great show. American Pickers is also good. Although, History Detectives on PBS is still my favorite.

Being an old stamp collector who saw the light and converted to coins I can tell you how appraisers work regarding stamp collections. I used to buy from Davitt Felder, who bought collections from auctions in New York and London, then sold them out of San Francisco. What any appraiser worth his salt will do is just look at the first page, and they will base their estimate on that. The first page of any album contains ninety percent of the worth of the entire collection.

Hoard now and hold on!
