Hard to be discrete when you are asking for 24 boxes at a time. They know I'm a penny junkie. If they ask why I want so many pennies I just tell them I am a collector and I like looking through them. Much more efficient to get lots of boxes at one stop. If they ask if I have an account I go ahead and open one as long as it is free. I have lots of accounts with only 10 bucks in them. Don't be shy about asking for lots of pennies.. they might just say "Yes!"

I think N.F. String & Son paper is used more back east.. it is just another generic wrapping paper. Of course if you wanted to reroll your pennies in that paper because people on eBay want new BU coins in N.F. String & Son paper (somehow believing coins in that paper are better) then you could just order the paper from their website and roll your own.

well i went back to the same branch where i got my 50% yesterday and asked for 30 rolls today. Lo and behold this time they gave me all hand wrapped ones. one very old looking wrapper i recognized as the same kind that i got on a roll last saturday when i went there. the numbers are alittle skewed because 1 roll was entirely old canadian. latest date was 1973 and there was 1 1932 (numismatic value 50 cents). i didnt get the 50% this time but did a little better than my average.
456 copper incl 1 wheat for 30.4%.
59 canadian.
57 1982's
i guess somebody decided that they didnt need gramps old roll of canadian pennies that had been in the attic since '73

Away for the weekend so it impacts Penny sorting and buying, but it doesn't take me completely out of the game.

Coin buying report for yeasterday:
Bank of America - Livermore
1 Box customer wrapped pennies - They let me have these after I restocked them with 4 shiny new boxes of zincs. They really appreciated me binging in the 4 boxes since they missed their coin shipment on Friday.

Front desk at Doubletree in San Jose
5 rolls bank wrapped pennies - Saw them in the drawer when I was checking in at the hotel and asked if they would sell them to me. It never hurts to ask. The lady was happy to get rid of them.

Had trouble finding a box. My usual sources shut me down, but I did find one. I guess I'm going to have to start ordering them like some of the other guys on this forum.

1 copper canuck
78 82s
1 20 centavos from 1997

No shame in ordering them. Order several boxes so they think you're a big player. Sure beats trying to chase down all those boxes of pennies. I have 24 boxes sitting at the bank for me that I have to stop by and pick up in the morning.

you are SMOKIN there Hoard Copper by the Ton!!
20 b/w rolls today
291 copper for 29.1% including 11 wheat
30 82's
4 canadian
it amazes me in these bankwrapped rolls how you can get pennies which have seeming been turned in at the same time. Of the 11 wheaties i got today in just 20 rolls, 8 were 1942 or 1942D. that would suggest that someone turned in a large amt of pennies from those years at the same time. PS since i started this in April, i have seen many pennies from 41 - 45 but not one steelie yet.

Thanks centsless. I had to stop after sorting just one roll.. otherwise I was sure I was going to mess up my percentage.. LOL. I have found only 1 1943 steel cent in all the coins I have sorted.

Thanks for the info on the Canadian Nickels, pencilvanian. I was glad to finally get some after reading all the stories here about guys getting all those solid nickels.

2 rolls

33 copper
2 82's

What would be the best way to store the copper for future selling? Rolled up or in bags? Or in my case right now-in coffee cans.

I'm using five gallon buckets from Lowes. Cost around $7 with a lid, and will hold a lot of cents.

My friend and I had a thought. We were thinking that 1 gallon milk containers (Plastic, rinsed and dried out of course) would make a good trade unit size coin-tainer. They would hold $50 in coppers nicely, which calculates out to about ~34 lbs of coins. Then you could "borrow" some milk crates from the local dairy and nicely stack them 4 at a time. Each crate would be 136 lbs. Then you could perhaps stack them 4 high, and build a wall of sorts (no pun intended).
It may be hard to get them out later, and you may have to razor the milk jug, but for "free" long term storage, many people already drink the milk, and the containers are quite durable. Much more than any ziplock or heavy poly bag. Getting the coins in would be facilitated by sawing off a transmission funnel (long taper type...Walmart $1.50)so it just fits inside the mouth of the jug. Then if you have a wrapper with batch function, just go right off the bagger into the funnel.

Any thoughts welcome.

I think the way you store them depends on what you have available as far as containers and equipment. Think about how you will be selling them. What will the standard unit size be? I would think they would sell in nice even unit sizes the same as wheat cents and silver bullion coins do now. So your most common storage size would be $50 bags. Those milk jugs might work, but what is the possiblility of the coins turning nasty and green from long term storage in such a container.. would that make them unmarketable? Check with your bank and see if they will give you some free bank bags. One of my banks gives me lots of those heavy duty plastic bags they ship coins in. I fill them up with zinc and turn them in. I also fill them with copper cents and store them. They hold $50 nicely. I really like the canvas coin bags for long term storage if you can get them. Some banks give them away for free because they have all converted to the heavy duty plastic bags for shipment. You can also buy them from banking supply houses for about $1.10 each. I think buyers would like to get them packaged that way. You might also set aside a a few half bags ($25 each) so you won't have to recount them. That will probably be a standard unit also. I wouldn't bother rolling them (lots of work) unless you have a rolling machine. If you have access to a rolling machine you might want to make up some solid copper rolls like the Hobbit's Hoard guy does and fill up some of your empty $25 penny boxes with them. Those boxes stack really well, and a roll is a good standard unit. You also have everything precounted and you can make a sale and quickly count out the amount for the buyer at whatever level he wishes to invest. Soem people who can't get any free coin bags have been known to store $25 or $50 in copper pennies in those Free Tyvek Priority mail envelopes from the post office. Of course those are only supposed to be used for mailing purposes. Maybe those folks are just getting everything ready to ship way ahead of time..

For the $50 penny bag be advised that each bag will weigh a little over 32 pounds. ( I learned this the hard way Talk about a penny workout.)

I think hoard copper by the ton is right,in that the best amount to store copper in is the "bag" $50 or the "half bag" $25. I like ryedale's idea of a $50 milk jug-it comes with its own handle too. As for a milk jug turning the coins into green slime,do milk jugs have PVC's in them to do this?

I also like the idea of using the old pennie boxes for storage. $25 in loose copper should fit in nicely with a piece of cardboard to help stabilize any gaps.
