Im back. Has anyone here ever used the coinstar giftcard option? My understanding is that there is no fee if you take the gift card option. If yes, how are things rounded off, meaning if you have 23.46 in pennies do you get a 23.46 gift card or do they only come in certain denominations? I could not find that answer on their website. I think I am goingto use this option once in awhile. Mainly for getting a break from rolling but I think it would be cool to have your pennies buy you entertainment. Most vendorsI wouldn't use except AMC theatres and Amazon.com. Also to give as gifts as I do this anyway...yes I know gift cards are a rip-off..most don't get used up before expiration date..you'r better off just giving the person cash..blah blah blah. Our local consumer advocate Clark Howard who's syndicated is totally insanely against gift cards. My retort to him is, yes you are correct Clark from an economical point of view but I want to give my nephew a gift card to Best Buy say and want him to use the money there rather than spending it on whatever. I do give cash most of the time but sometimes it's nice to get a gift card to someplace you like. Makes me kinda excited, because I might not allways use the money for my pleasure. My Dad used to sneak me some cash when I was in my early 20's and livin paycheck to paycheck( I was actually happier then. Soon as a made some real money I was afraid to lose it) My Dad would say "now this is to be used for taking your gal out for pizza", or something like that and of course I would say sure. but most if not all the time it went to filling the gas tank of paying the bills. Now if he gave me a gift card to the pizza place he could be assured I'd use it there.

There was a funny quote in the paper that said if everyone shopped like Clark Howard(frugal to the max) the economy would crumble..lol. chow

I tried that one time, and it did give a voucher for exactly the amount you put in. I chose an Amazon certificate, as I buy some supplies from them. Worked good, the ticket had a code you input at amazon.com, and it takes your amount on the ticket off the total bill. It was smooth and painless. Only problem is the coinstar is painfully slow to feed say $100 worth of zinc. It Ker-Chunks along and then pauses, It even showed I had a few dimes in the zinc pennies, (not so) but I was not complaining.

I have used it before and it worked fine. As Andy says, it is kind of slow.. about 600 coins a minute. I put the money on a Starbucks card. You just take your regular Starbucks card and insert it and it adds the money right to the card. I could see using it for Amazon.com also since I buy stuff on there regularly. There was actually a thread on here a while back about how if for some reason the telephone line to the modem on the back of the Coinstar machine were to accidently become disconnected it would try a few times to connect then give you a message about not being able to connect and issue you a receipt for the full amount with no deduction for fees.

AHHH. My favorite suggestion to the Mint. Make our currency in the denominations needed for everyday life. An example would be when you take your coins to those machines and the total comes out to be $37.93, you would get a legal tender bill for $37.93. Ever notice all stores have merchandise for $1.99, $2.99, $3.99? One more reason to have currency bills like that. We have no reason to have bills in exact denominations since nothing comes out to be exactly $1. Naturally this would mean a vast amount of currency, but look how much faster people would learn to count with this system.

It's really good if you can get a gift card when you put in only Zincolns, and be able to sell the coppers, and sell the card to your friends for a 10-15% discount
