Right now, I'm too broke to get anything to sort ("broke" in liquid FRN terms, not real terms) and what few rolls of nickels I do buy, even from out-of-the-way banks, are already searched. I think maybe some of the tellers are finally getting wise, and I know that large coin operators (e.g. CDI) are now pulling good nickel. I beilive we're rapidly approaching the "no more real nickels in circulation" horizon and they will soon be as rare in change as silver dimes and quarters.

Thanks for the tips on using banks and credit unions to get and give back the unwanted change. As luck would have it, I found a local credit union that has a free self serve coin sorter for members. My plan is to "take from the bank and give to the credit union".

Last two boxes:
430 (17.6%) and 503 (20%) coppers respectively. 8 wheats each. 65 and 83 1982s. |

I have been hand sorting unboxed rolls of pennies and I'm pulling out about 23% copper.

Congrats on finding a great place to get rid of your zinc. One of the great things about this board is the free sharing of ideas and experiences. Looks like you are getting a great copper percentage at over 37%. What part of the country are you from? You should be able to get a scale for about $8-10. You might check on eBay for one, but be sure to factor in the shipping cost. Some sellers are very reasonable on shipping and some try to make shipping a profit center.

This is the bank where I dump my zinc but it has been over a month since my last dump so I'm pretty sure these coins will be fresh and not the same ones I turned in.

| Ardent, I wish my percentages were that high. I have noticed that my percentage from AmericanBank is higher than from Wells Fargo. I don't know how these two banks go about rolling the pennies in their boxes, but something is causing a 3 to 5% difference in copper. Or, it could just be a run of good or bad luck for the boxes I get. |

Once and a while I get some nice bunches of rolls. In the last 20 rolls I noticed alot of early 1970's. One roll was 46% copper. I think I ran into an old penny jar or jars that were cashed in and somehow stayed together thru a couple sortings and then rolled. I plan to go back on Monday and pick up some more rolls.
I live in West Bend Wisconsin, which is about 30 miles North of Milwaukee.I have searched rolls before, but only a couple rolls a month for kicks to see what I could find. I do find searching penny and nickel rolls fun and believe that the 2006-2009 years of hoarding copper will be like the mid 1960's silver hoarding. These may be the last years to pull copper and nickel out of circulation below its melt value.
I also am trying to get rolls of half dollars to search thru,but everywhere I go they only have what is in the tellers coin tray. The last time I was able to get a couple rolls was at a small bank in a small northern Wisconsin city while on vacation. Out of those 2 rolls I found 3 40% silvers. |

As far as I know, the R.C.M. has contracted one or more coin processors to start pulling pure nickels, since the mint itself doesn't handle the coin after it's minted.

Even if it was just a few of us pulling out copper coins our percentages should continue to grow smaller each year because of the introduction of new zinc coins alone. I noticed a lot of 06s & 07s lately.
I'm getting more into hoarding the pennies again rather than the nickels. It's not so much the decline in nickel prices. Rather it's because I have a ton of them (nickels) already, copper prices are holding well, it doesn't appear they are going to stop making nickels out of copper/nickel anytime soon, and also because I'm saving-up to pay cash for a new car and restocking my food hoard.
I'm holding on to the zincers too.

You are a richer man than I. I can't afford to hold onto all those zincers. I don't have that much capital (or storage space). I keep having to trade them in so I can buy more mixed boxes. Yep, that is a rough batch.. but better than those solid boxes of 2007 all zinc cents you were getting.
I didn't have time to sort any today.. sometimes I have to actually work.. LOL, but my boss found an 1865 Indian cent in one of the rolls she sorted today.

Hmmmmmm.. that might work. 300 rolls is a good week for me. How close are you? According to my girlfriend I have plenty of extras she would like me to give you. I normally ship out 150 rolls at a time, but that would put you way over! Are you still storing them in paint cans or have you changed storage methods?

What do you think is the attraction of counting? Is it going for high average? Or is it variability in the result?
BTW 8 rolls Canadian nickels, only 55 Ni (17%) much worse than average. But there was one roll which had no steel nickels at all--none after 1999. Normally about 35% are steel.

Well I went back to my bank that had the jackpot rolls and they had about 5, and yes all were copper, bought 10 rolls total.
47% copper total
2 canandian
2 wheaties
1 panama coin? kinda cool
Then on to bank #2 for 10 more rolls.
back to reality
11.7%

5 canadian, one from 1947, different design,kinda cool

current observations: first Im glad to be doing this again. My life has been pretty busy latley and I stop at bank on way home where the tellers know me and are all very nice. I never went inside a bank for years after having netbank and I love the old time human contact I get now. then I go home and sort right away to decompress. It's funny, as I was finding the all copper rolls I thought it would not be as much fun if all rolls were like that, it would take the fun out of it. Profitable yes, but I consider this a hobby first, the money is just gravy. I love the thrill of a wheatie, a foreign coin or any other misc coin. i love seeing a very shiny penny and think it's got to be post 82 and it's usually a 1970's. i love the look and feel of the copper ones, especially when you know for certain it's a keeper. The darker color, the heftier weight. I also like getting bummed when you find a darker one and are certain it's a keeper and it turns out to be a 1990's(happens alot). what I don't like is rolling, but Im blessed with a wife who likes to roll with me. Im up to 25 lbs. My goal is at least 100 by years end and 1000 before our secret is out.

That's how I feel when prospecting through a stack of pennies. I would like to add too that I enjoy seeing my tub of zincers grow full. Sure, I would rather they were copper. Still, I would rather have the zinc than a note from the Federal Reserve that is backed-up with only the promise to pay with another F.R. note.

I'm still sorting pennies pretty seriously - nearly a part-time job. I'm making hay while the sun shines.... This is my biggest week yet:
Picked up $700 in bank boxes (28 boxes total)....all were packaged in N.F.String boxes and parer wrappers.
4 boxes were brand new 2007 mint/unc.
24 boxes of mixed zinc and copper. Copper percentage was 31%....that is 2 percent above average (excluding the 4 boxes of 2007 mint/unc). If I include the 2007 boxes, I'd be down to 28%.....
Typical rate around S.E. Mich is 29%.
Added another 200# to the hoard this past week!!!!! I'm solidly into my 2nd ton now. Not pulling wheats - they are still in there. My Rydale sorting machine is closing in on 2 million coins processed in under 4 months.
I figure I've sorted about 15,000 lbs of coins in the past 4 months.

Very impressive #'s! I better get busy or you are going to pass me pretty soon. How did you manage to talk the banks out of 28 boxes? Do you preorder them or just go to every bank in town and try to get 2-3 boxes from each. When I order large orders of pennies they always insist that I pick them up the same day the armored car delivers them because they say they don't have enough vault space to store all my pennies.
