I also like the idea of using the old pennie boxes for storage. $25 in loose copper should fit in nicely with a piece of cardboard to help stabilize any gaps.
Just filled a clean milk jug with 5000 coppers. Fills it almost completely full, in fact you have to settle it a couple times while filling with the cut off transmission funnel I spoke about. Once full the handle feels way less "significant" compared to being filled with milk.
The milk cartons are made with HDPE. High Density poly ethylene. It has no PVC in it. I think I like it for free long term storage. Not very romantic like the bags, but very effctive, and meets the "trade unit" specification. Oh it weighs in at 35.35 lbs (including milk jug). I'm using a Royal brand shipping scale, purchased at Sams Club. It is a ex315w model. I have checked it against Fedexs' scales when I ship things. It comes in only slightly less by a couple 10ths of a lb. So overall very accurate. Now I do not know that my old jet sort, is super accurate. I'm having trouble with it. but its very close. I used the jet sort to count the batch into the funnel, and into the milk jug.

This weeks sorting activity.
220 FRN credits.
Got 9321 coppers. (very high percentage this week, I will explain)
9321/22000 is 42.36%
I got my normal 100 FRN credits worth of brinks box (plastic wrapped) and 120 credits worth loose, and customer wrapped rolls from here out called CWR.
45 FRN credits of the CWR came in at 87%. The rest were average. Unbelievable percentage. But I'm not complaining.
Added 60 plus pounds to the hoard.

Started out with my best roll ever with 36 coppers! I had high hopes for the other 9 rolls, but my best roll after that was only 20 coppers.

Good to see you guys posting some big #'s on the board. No big #'s from me this week. Had to work a lot at the day job since 2 people were on vacation. Going through withdrawals. When you work a 19 hour day it just doesn't leave much time for sorting, even if you have the best equipment available.
Had a good day of random penny pickups today before going in to work. Was able to convert 83 FRN credits into CWRs.
Coin Buying Report for today: Wells Fargo - Livermore 50 rolls pennies

Great percentages! You have been busy. Glad to see you finally got a scale. Hope you will post your percentages for the 82's here. By production figures it should almost be 50/50, but I am betting it comes in closer to 75% copper for the 82's.
Now that you have a scale you might try using it to sort rather than eyeballing each cent. My sorting speed increased substantially when I switched to using a scale.

The sorting went faster with a little help from friends, but they won't be around for every box.
Hoard by the ton what is your method of sorting rolls by using a scale? |

Most of the time I use my Ryedale sorter now. At the volumes I sort it was the only way for me to keep up.
I used to be a fairly serious hand sorter until I realized that I could never keep up with my 40 box a week habit that way. The way that worked best for me was using a digital scale. I have a higher end scale with a fast settlement rate. I pour a roll of pennies in one hand and then drop 1, 2, 3 or 4 pennies at a time onto the scale. Since most rolls have about 80% zinc you can do multiple coins at a time and you know right away if you dropped a copper in the stack if it is not a multiple of 2.5 grams. A lot of times you can pretty much guess before the weight comes up just by looking at the color of the pennies. With my other hand I kick them to the left or right depending on if they are zinc or copper. When the piles get big I slide them off the table into their bins. I was able to do a box in about an hour with this method, a little longer if I was doing it at a more leisurely pace. I think my rate prior to switching from a magnifying glass to using the scale was about 2.5 hours per box. That method is best if you can't source many boxes of pennies and you need to make them last.

20 rolls today 303 coppers including 5 wheats, 1 of them a 1925 in good 30.3% 41 1982's 4 canadian and 1 british coin, it just says new penney, it is alittle bigger than a nickel. 4 of the rolls were handwrapped. looks like they were packed away in 1988 because besides being mostly copper, there were several unc 86,87 and 88's. just more evidence that the middle class is cashing in all the coinage they had saved over the last 25 years. i picked up an almost unc $10 bill last weekend series 1977, 30 years old. |

"1 british coin, it just says new penney, it is alittle bigger than a nickel."
If it is dated 1992 & earlier it is bornze, 1993 & later, copper plated steel. I hope it's copper.

pencilvanian, is the coin fron england? my last response was very dumb "i should have guessed it was from britain". i should have said "i should have guessed it was from the mother country." if indeed thats where the coin is from. i have seen coins in the past from canada , the bahamas, new zealand and others with the queen on the front. its odd this coin specifies no country. |

Yes it is a British/UK/ Great Britian coin. The Queen is head of state of many former British colonies, though forum member Harbinger would most likely have a better understanding and give a better explanation than I could give.

20 rolls today- 10 of them hand wrapped 272 copper for 27.2 % including 6 wheat, 1 is a 1935 35 1982's 4 canadian all of the hand wrapped rolls i get seem to be telling stories. today's story was that they were wrapped somewhere out west in 2001 as they were predominately Denver mint, ( a rarity for maine to have mostly D pennies in a roll)and many unc 99's 00's and 01's, all D's. no "fereigners" this time.
