Coin buying report for today: Wells Fargo Bank - Pinole 2 Boxes Bank wrapped nickels 1 Box Bank wrapped pennies
Coin sorting Report for today: 112 Bank wrapped rolls pennies 1268 Copper 3 US dimes 22.6%
Boss found a 1938-D nickel in one of her Credit Union rolls today. So there are still some coins worth finding in circulation. I gotta start getting some coins at the credit unions!

I was actually able to put together my first couple of tons without a machine, but a majority of those are BU rolls and Bags that I bought in large coin deals and just stuck in the back storage room. I was able to add a good amount of weight by hand sorting.. switching from a magnifying glass to a digital scale early on when I realized I was able to sort much faster with the scale. I kept going out and buying boxes of pennies and getting further and further behind on my sorting.. I think I had something like 120 boxes of unsorted pennies stacked up. I decided I really needed a machine. The machine quickly freed up enough capital in the form of zinc turned in at the bank to pay for itself many times over. Automation is really the key do doing decent volumes. You can glean the fields or you can buy a really good tractor and farm some serious acreage. Each person has to decide for themselves what level they wish to farm at, and whether an investment in capital equipment is justified. If you are going to do some serious hoarding then the Rydale machine is the way to go. How many capital investments completely pay for themselves in the first day or two?

Well, maybe, I am breaking down. I visited the Ryedale coin sorter site and watched the short video. One can certainly harvest much copper with the "Ryedale combine" in a short, short amount of time. It takes me a good 2 to 2 and half hours to sort through a box of pennies sorting the copper, wheats, 1982s and the zincs (I wish I could say Indian heads, but haven't found one yet). It looks like I could quickly sort a box, in 10 minutes or less, with a Ryedale. Then, sort through the 20% or so of coppers for the wheats. My only loss would be the zinc small date 1982s. But, I'm not much of a numismatist anyway. Then, I will need a mechanical roller as well. |

I was getting pretty good at hand sorting.. able to do a box in about an hour with my digital scale, but even at that rate it would have been like another full time job to process the 40 boxes per week I was buying.. so it certainly made sense for me to go out and get the bigger tractor. I have even actually found a couple of Indian heads.. sorting large volumes increases your chances of finding good stuff. I have a couple of Glory mechanical rollers also. Got those before I got the Ryedale machine. I figured out early on that I didn't want to hand roll all that zinc. You don't actually have to get a roller. The best way to get rid of your zinc is if you can find a credit union with a free counter in the lobby where you can turn in your bulk zinc like several guys here do. I found the next best solution so I don't have to roll my zinc anymore. One of my banks will take the bulk zinc in bags of $50 loose. And they even provide the bags for free. I have a Glory high speed counter with bagging attachment that works great for this.. counts about 2,000 coins per minute. Another great tractor for my farm. Bagged up 15 bags of zinc last night. Now I just gotta load up the wagon and haul it into the bank to trade in on more seed. Shop around at various banks and credit unions first for a way to dispose of your zinc and you won't have to buy a roller or counter. I believe Rydale has come out with a new budget line of combines. You get the same great tractor without all that expensive sheet metal and pretty red paint for less money. And he even offers a trade in plan. If you get one of the budget models you can trade up to one with all the bells and whistles later. This way you can start harvesting at a much cheaper price now and if you want you can buy the fancy tractor with the air conditioned cab after your first crop comes in.

todays sort
$6.00
16.83 % copper. A lot better than yesterdays. Actually bought $35, but $29 of it was 07's. It's getting harder and harder for me to find mixed rolls now. But as always, more than I had before. |

I am rationing out my boxes as I seem to be having a hard time getting them haha. Don't want to be caught with another dry spell. I got lucky with the last two- poor teller didn't know any better than to give me their last two full boxes. I haven't got around to ordering any from them- sides I already have $200 in coin needing recycled. Gonna try for some halves when I go to cash my check at the main bank. So far sorted 35 rolls, got 379 copper with 5 wheaties. Some rolls have 16 and others 5 or 6. Mark |

Yeah, I hate when I run out too. Happens to me all the time. Don't you feel guilty taking that teller's last 2 boxes of pennies? You know she is gonna remember you the next time you ask for pennies.. LOL! Looks like you are just shy of 22%.. pretty good percentage.

Sorting Report for today: 100 Rolls customer wrapped pennies 1029 Copper 20.58%
Coin Buying Report for today: Bank of America - Livermore 4 Boxes Bank wrapped pennies
Dropped off 10 Bags of zincs here today. Would have brought more but I got lazy. I asked if I could have some more pennies. The coin lady said they were running low so she could only let me have 4 boxes but she would be happy to add in as many as I want to next week's coin order. So I asked her to get me an extra 24 boxes. I know some of you guys say you should never buy your pennies from where you dump your zinc.. sort of like really upset me to the point of seeing yellowing upstream from your water collection plant, but it is just so damn convenient. I think this bank does enough volume that my little $500 zinc injection won't affect the flow of this huge penny river. Of course I will be checking the yield percentage on those 24 boxes to see if I had any effect. I won't drop off the next 10 Bags of zinc until I go in to pick up the fresh boxes.

$25.00 (finally able to find a full box of mixed)
1992 zinc 501 copper 1 wheat (1956-D) 4 canadian (1972, 1975, 1979, 1989) 1 dime 1 slug
20.04 %
First time in a LONG LONG time I've broke 20 %. I could almost say I'm giddy. I had to call around to different banks to see if they could sell me a box. After the 6th call I finally found one. I think the bank I've been using has just run "dry".

For 3 boxes: 2179 copper 29.52% 203 1982's 2.7% 28 wheats 12 canada My eyeballs need a rest!
Today after paying for gas and a snack at the local gas station I was due one cent in change. The girl put the penny straight into the take/leave a penny tray. I told her that I expected my change no matter how small. I then picked a nice dark 1974-d cent from the tray. Too bad most people do not understand the increasing value of the lowly penny. But then again, they leave more out there for us to glean from circulation. |

Worked this afternoon, my real job, Got home and my bank had called, they have 5 bags for me to pick up tomorrow. Guess I'll have some extra "work" this weekend. Can't wait. Got a 1914 wheat last week. No "d" on it though. Funny how that little mintmark makes such a huge difference. I have sorted about $600 face in the last three weeks, averaging about 28%. Hope the new vein is as rich as the last.

No wheaties. No Canadian. No other misc coin.
kinda weird no other coins.
had some real shiny early 70's, allmost uncirculated.
Roll type: "Paper" with both ends hand folded.
* the other kind of "Paper" is the one end hand folded and other end professionally sealed.

Picked up the pennies today, total of $350 face, but have not started sorting, $50 of this was customer wrapped rolls, and the ones with similar paper (about 20 rolls) I started to unwrap, and discovered copper free rolls. Fortunately this was only a small portion of the 100 rolls of customer wrapped. I also picked up 4 commercial plastic wrapped rolls in Brinks boxes from another bank. They all look dark and mixed this week. I asked them to pick out any "shiny" new boxes and only give me the "good" ones. I think I am going to up my order with that bank. Well I'll give the sort report when I get them done, probably fire up a couple machines tomorrow. The luxury of being the "factory". Andy

First 20 rolls out of box #2 for the week, so far 208 coppers- no wheaties yet. Picking up a box of halves at the bank Tuesday- try a different vein. Depending on how far away I have to park, maybe I will pick up another box of cents or more halves if they got any. I had to park two blocks away today to place the order- don't know how full I want my hands walking down town with $500 in a box the size of a brick haha. Is it Tuesday yet? Mark |

I wish I would have known about the pennies and nickels earlier in life, but I just started around 3 months ago (I am pretty sure that it started with learning the value of nickels on this forum.) I have sorted almost exactly $2000 and have ended up with almost exactly $400 in pre 1982 Ni and have not run across a single presorted roll (based on finding a minimum of 2 coins/roll.)
I bought 10 rolls of pennies today and found just over 3 rolls of pre '97 coins.
I discovered a week back that sorting with a powerful magnet gives good results on Canadian coins. I now take out about 1/3 of the nickels right off the bat and am just left with the pre '82 and plated coins. From there it is very quick to sort the good from the garbage. Tonight I discovered that with our pennies 2000-present has nickel in it so they are removed quickly leaving me the good stuff with some '97-99 coins mixed in that I have to pull out.
The economy where I live is booming and most people would consider it a waste of their time to sort coins so I have now ordered a few rolls into the bank for next week and will see what comes in (I hope to avoid the mint rolls.) Out of the 5 banks that I deal with in my area none have any other customers who want rolls of coin and they all look at me like I am a nut job. Most people are too ignorant to realize that a dollar based on the promise of a government who has not been know to keep a promise in over a decade is not smart. A strong economy has them looking away from the facts. I started holding silver quite awhile ago and will now slowly branch into base metals.
Anyhow, that should be long enough for a first post. |

Welcome to the board, Dolf. This is where all the like minded nut jobs hang out.
I can't quite sort at the level of the "factory" guy, but because of him I can get a good number of pennies sorted when I have a spare hour or two.

665 copper 26.6%
80 1982's 3.2%
9 wheats
6 canadian
1 zinc with a cross punched thru
To all the hand sorters, what is your method of sorting? I have tried a few different ways and found that holding a stacked opened roll in my left hand and picking them off one by one with my right hand works best for me. I used to sort by opening all the rolls at once into a pile and sort by flicking the zincs off a table and into a bucket. If anyone has a different method I'd like to try it out.

OK Heres the results,
37500 sorted today (15 boxes worth) 11512 Copper (combined wheat, canadian, and memorial) 11512/37500=.307 or 30.7% This is my best percentage lately. This even included the ~20 rolls of all zinc I spoke of earlier. Added ~78 lbs to the pile.
Now the fun stuff. I resorted some zinc, for "odd metal content" and came up with 4 dimes. I love getting dimes,as they are simply recycled into copper pennies. Oldest wheat=1918 Oldest Coin =1899 Indian Head. This is the oldest of the 3 Indian heads I have ever gotten. The other 2 were 1900 and 1907. Todays 1899 is very rough though, looks like it got badly pitted somehow, and was cleaned or something, had to use a magnifier to read the date. I got two indian heads early in the year in 2006. Pretty neat to pull any coin out of circulation that is over 100 years old.

20 rolls of pennies today: 271 copper, for 27.1% including a 1947D and 1953s, 17 1982's 5 canadian i got a high degree of anticipation today when the girl gave me all hand-wrapped rolls. they turned out to be mostly a disappointment although 1 roll looks like it was put away in the late 90's as there were a couple nice 1999's and 1 1998 in nice shape. Another roll you could tell was quite old as the design of the wrapper was odd and the surface of it was all fuzzy, as what happens with old paper rolls. turns out it was stashed away a long time ago but not long enough. that roll yeilded about 6 or 7 beautiful 1986's and 1 1987,but there were only 10 coppers in that roll. people around here in maine are definately cashing in the stash that they have had for years |
