Current coinflation values have the 5 cent US nickel at 91% of face. This is a fun little thing we have here with metals that we can get at near spot.

I will not be hoarding nickels untill either their metal content is changed or they start to sell for more than face. I think that when ever either of those happen, I will be able to still get plenty of nickels. |

You are looking at the wrong nickels.
Canadian pre 1982's are worth 9.17 each at melt (in Canadian, $8.62 US) at this moment. |

Cents is correct. The US price I typed was per pound or 100 coins. |

Let's hope we don't see them at $10 for each nickel any time soon, that would be some horrendous inflation!! Not a welcome thought. But 50c each would be okay. good for us who hoard them I suppose! |

My only consern with the nickels, is that once it hits the 120%-150% value, there might be a run on nickels at the banks since no one has to sort anything, and they will either ration them out or only sell them to business or set some other policy where average joe's can't get boxes of nickels anymore. If everyone starts hoarding nickels all at the same time, their might be a shortage within a few months. The window of oppertunity to hoard nickels in any significant volumes might only be open for a short period of time when the value reaches a certian threshold. No one is going to buy nickels for more than face until either a shortage occurs, or some other policy is introduced where average folks can't get nickels from the banks anymore. |

Whether inflation is normal or high nickels will be worth over 100% face soon enough.
The question though on the "run on the banks" is not when their value is 120% or higher, because most people won't notice anyway and since they are still in circulation people won't see the benefit.
The "run on the banks" will be when the government finally gets smart and starts making nickels out of steel or something else that is mostly worthless.
Then you may start to have problems getting them. |

We're up to 94.5% face today, I was thinking about having a contest for what day the spot price will hit 100% or higher, but at this rate, it will hit 100% by the end of the week. |

The melt ban lift won't change the Ni supply much, US Jeffs are only 25% Ni, Cu might feel it (temporally). I think the ban will be lifted to try and help industry meet demand until mining can ramp back up once the price allows the mine to make a profit. The metal price will stay above face value (if when that happens).
I think I'm feeling the Fevah (hit that thing, I need to hear it)! I think I might have to sock another 5 boxes away. Worst case, I'll have a chance at finding a Buff, War Nick or new Buff (or a Proof) and probably get a better return than a typical savings account with the FRN's I have tied up in REAL(5)CENTS. |

$8.80 - rock on, nickel.
$16 would be great - $1 an ounce. |

AGgressive Metal..... I'm surprised that someone in this forum would associate metals with their prices in non-troy ounces.
A troy pound only has 12 ounces in it. And I think one 'avidiporous??' ounce only weighs 28 grams!? |

It may not be that easy to supply a significant hoard if you wait that long. Why not start now while you know you can still get them? You will be ahead of the game and get a jumpstart on the new hoarders and collectors. |

You do have a point, but I just don't think that tying up my money now is neccessary. Even though nickel prices are up, the Mint is probably less inclined to change metal content because of the economy. They are making fewer nickels this year than they have in a long time. Thusly, they don't have to spend as much money on higher copper or nickel prices. So, if that changes in 2010, then yes, I might put away a box or two. But until the announcement comes out that the metal content is changing, I am not going to let my money sit in a closet doing nothing when it could be earning .1% in a savings account. |

Now this comment confuses me....it is my understanding that only Precious metals are measured in Troy ounces/pounds 12 ounces to a pound), and that Base metals are measured the other way (16 ounces to a pound)....am I incorrect here? Can someone elaborate?....Thanks! |

As stated before, hoarding nickels later with the thought that they are as easy to order as penny boxes/bags is a fallacy. Far fewer ever punched. You cannot order 20 boxes of nickels from banks as easily as pennies. Hoard 'em or be left in the dust. |
The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities. |

But, as nickel and copper prices increase, the value of that box of nickels sitting in the closet increases as well, so it's not sitting there doing nothing. It is sitting there appreciating in value, perhaps appreciating even more than .1 % in a savings account. |

You're right, but I can see why it would cause confusion. For instance, the one ounce Liberty Dollar coppers are avidiporous and the one ounce silver LDs are troy. |

Lifting the melt ban will have very little effect on Cu/Ni prices. The amount of metals in coinage, compared to the amount of commercial grade, is insignificant. |

As to my post.... yes, that wasn't as clear as it could have been.
My point was, that when the prices of copper and nickel and perhaps another or two base metals gets so high due to demand or inflation etc, that it will be treated like a precious metal right? and will be measured out in Troy units rather than the common lb/ounce units.
Just a thought. |

It will never happen. Many industrial metals are valued much higher than Cu or Ni, even at their historic highs. It wasn't that long ago when molybdenum was going for ~$40/lb. |
