If everyone starts hoarding nickels all at the same time, their might be a shortage within a few months. The window of oppertunity to hoard nickels in any significant volumes might only be open for a short period of time when the value reaches a certian threshold. No one is going to buy nickels for more than face until either a shortage occurs, or some other policy is introduced where average folks can't get nickels from the banks anymore.
I agree that the window of opportunity to hoard them may quickly close once their value reaches a certain point. There is a very limited supply of them with only about $8.00 ever minted per American. Since no sorting of them is needed they could be pulled out of circulation very quickly.
I'm currently buying U.S. nickels at the banks again while I still can. |

When Ni and Cu did their run-up to historic values in 2007, I was picking up nickels at the bank every payday. I backed off accumulation since then, but still put away about $50 FV every siz months. |

Let's have a base metals price celebration! My current base metal hoarding goals are almost met. Cheers! |
The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities. |

I don't think we have seen anything yet as far as base metal prices go. Inflation, recovery, either or both, base metal prices still have a long way up to go.

I agree- a long long way to go on price. I'm celebrating meeting the net goal for quantity stored- esp .999 nickel
Cheers! |

I think it's funny that everyone thinks increasing the supply will bring up the price of copper. It's like idionomics. Or am i just missing something.

Not supply, but demand will increase the price of base metals. That increase in demand may come in the form base metals as a hedge against inflation and/or it could come from an economic recovery thus more demand from industry. But cupronickel is correct, all the copper pennies and nickels ever minted would be but a spit in the base metal world-wide bucket. |

I was told last Friday (8/7/09) that the nickel miners working for INCO in Canada went on strike (again). Jeez, do these guys ever settle a contract without going out? I would guess that they are the best paid miners in the world!
Anyways, a trader told me to buy now, or nickel prices will go a lot higher. But isn't that what traders always say...? |

Yes they do unless they are selling short. Strikes and their metal price increases don't interest me too much since they are settled sooner or later. Increased demand such as what we saw a couple years ago with China is another story. Sure that bubble broke too, but how long until another comes along? |

Let me be the first to congratulate the US nickel for returning to parity. Cheers! |

On that note jonflyfish, let me be the first to congratulate Canadian .999 nickels on achieving a 2 bagger today in Canadian dollar terms.
At this moment, they are worth 9.29 each US or 10.11 Canadian. |

Both Copper an Nickel have pretty much doubles in value in the past 6 months. Just imaging if we were not in a global recession! |

The good news: Recession should be at or near the end. The bad news: Depression is just beginning. |
