There are some who follow base metals prices who are investments or who are purchasers of these metals for their business and want to gauge the demand and future price for these metals.
Stainess steel isn't bought or sold as a commodity (though it is bought and sold as scrap). The base metal nickel, which goes into making many types of stainess steel, is used as an indicator to predict in what direction stainless steel prices are going.

Here is something esle to consider: If the demand for nickel and stainless steel are increasing, then that may be an indicator of where the world economy is going (the more indicators the better.)
I would rather rely on steel demand growing as proof of a recovery than 'green shoots' sprouting up any day.
