The last thread hit 10 pages so I'm starting up another one. Post your reports for others to see here.

Handsorted (18) String & Son rolls ($9.00) last night. Got my lowest percentage of 1959-1981 in this lot by a wide margin since I started sorting in mid-June. The stats:

Total: 900
Canadian: 6 (0.67%) 81, 85, 94, (2) 99, 00
Wheat: 3 (0.33%) 19, 56D, 57D
59-81: 148 (16.44%)
82: 20 (2.22%)
83-Current: 723 (includes 3 logsplitters) (80.33%)

Running totals (since 6/13/2009):

Total: 24,500
Foreign (ex Canada): 2 (Bahamas 1c, Euro-France 2c) (0.01%)
Canadian: 71 (0.29%)
Wheat: 124 (0.51%)
59-81: 6,910 (28.20%)
82: 860 (3.51%)
83-Current: 16,533 (67.48%)

Canadian breakdown:

42-79 (.98 Cu/3.24 gm): 29 (oldest is 1943)
80-81 (.98 Cu/2.80 gm): 7
82-96 (.98 Cu/2.50 gm): 23
97-99 (.984 Zinc): 6
00-Current (.94 Steel): 6

Overall 59/71 are Cu of varying weights.

Wheat breakdown:

09-19: 3 09, 16, 19
20-29: 3 24, 25D, 27
30-39: 6
40-49: 48
50-58: 64
Total: 124 (43 different)

To me keeping all the stats can be fun and certainly insightful, but over time, I'm fearful that a case of paralysis from over analysis might set in.

Cheers,

Jeff

Got "skunked" on finding another IH cent in my last $50 bag! Was getting spoiled since the last 2 bags yielded 3 total. Oh well!

The good news is I hit a small "jackpot" of copper, and nice copper at that! My bag weighed about 30.2 lbs. net (cents only) so I knew it would be high. Did a line regression of the other two and estimated that I'd get about 39% copper. And sure enough, the final tally was 40.9%! That's 2045 total copper cents! The best part was that almost 600 of them were shiny - looked better than some 2008 or 2009 cents I've seen - they almost looked like gold there among the dirty other cents. Someone must have dumped a bunch of old, nice copper. Most were mid to late 70's with some 60's and 80's. I'll give more specifics tomorrow. Thanks all!

Just a few details of my last $50 bag described above:

59 Wheat (inc. 1918, 37, 38 & 44 S)
6 "S" Coppers
4 Canadian Copper
1 mangled 1991 dime (partially elongated to width of cent in once area!)

Guess I was lucky finding the 3 IHC in previous 2 bags. To those who have not, try getting bags from local small banks & Credit Unions. They don't get a supply from Brinks et al because they recycle a lot of their own members coins. Good luck!

jadedragon: there does not seem to be too much interest in reporting sort %'s here since I last did almost a month ago. Oh well, here's my report for $50 bag #4.

25.6% copper including 10 wheat & 1 blank copper. Overall for the 4 bags I've sorted is 31.7%.

The 25.6% was the lowest I've had. That's the bad news. The good news is I just picked up four (4) more $50 bags! My lovely & understanding wife just rolled her eyes at me & laughed when I told her.

I'll report them here in the coming weeks & months!

I've hand-sorted about $1300 the past few months with a total Cu of 31%. My last box was the best, 3 wheats showing (ended up with ~30 total) with total Cu of 34%.

I have not done exact calculation lately, but it seems I am averaging 28-35%, I am getting about one box of copper to every three boxes I sort. Usually have 2-3 wheat pennies per box and 8-10 Canadian (60 miles from Lake Erie). I found a Bermuda coin with a boar on it lately, a 1943 20 centavo silver coin and a cool Panamanian centavo recently. Seems I get more odd stuff out of bags than rolls.

In among my Canadian rolls were 3 penny rolls clearly marked U.S. These were nearly solid copper and included 23 wheats.

After my first ten boxes in the Chicago area... I am going to only go to banks that use Garda as their coin service, Brinks scrubs the Cu out way too much. Ten boxes from three different banks, 31% copper, 14 Wheats per box average, 6 Canadians per box 90% Cu, two oddballs (1 Bermuda, 1 Bahamas) and no IH yet.

My percentage of Cu has significantly dropped off my last 7 sorts (my sorts are usually in the $10 to $25 range)...what had been running in the 19 - 21% range has lately been in the 16 - 17 % range. I think I need to change my bank route for awhile.

I hand sorted $170 worth of pennies and came up with 26.6 pounds of 1982 and earlier.(I weighed all of the 82s) I also found 47 wheat cents including 2 1958 that look uncirculated. I averaged 20-25% copper. Someone had a bad day as I found 7 rolls of all copper pennies. I'm in a border state and found 1-2% canadian. I also found 6 dimes and a Philippine 5 sentavos.

I have been sorting for about 3 months now and I have not seen one IH, I have had 2 full rolls of wheaties in a box of $20. I have been averaging @ 25% cu and 4 % canadian(90% cu). I'm new at this and have not yet figured out what to do with all cu pennies I have collected. But I'm having a good time doing it.

You guys that are getting above 20% and especially above 30% have it made. You should double your efforts to take advantage of it while you can. In California, I have done 55 boxes with an average of 17%. My best box was 23%

I did 4 more boxes and came up with 15.4 pounds of copper. I did a count on 1982's and got 173 copper and 83 zinc. I am still running around 23% copper. I only found 1 dime and 1 foreign coin, a 2 cent piece that I don't recognize. I only found about a dozen wheats too, that is much lower than the last batch, but one was a 1934.

Sorted two fifty dollar bags. Returned Zincolns to coin counter at CU, got $70.41. So, those two bags averaged just under 30%. I do not seem to do that well with Brinks boxes.??

last weeks sort:

$300

9325 coppers
70 wheats
55 canadians
20550 zincers

9325/30000 = 31.08 %

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.
