I was thinking it would be fun to track proofs. All denominations (besides halves) in one thread. Do you think it would happen seldom enough overall that it would be easily tracked? Just thinking. Any opinions?
EDIT: Here's what I came up with after some quick info gathering:

I'm already tracking the Half Dollar proofs in the *Official 2010 Half Dollars and Other Coins threads. If someone wants to step up and add what proofs our Copper and Nickel searchers are finding, please do so. Here's a listing of the Half Dollar proof that have been found so far in 2010:

They count as a commemorative half found.
I put the commemorative halves into just two classes: SILVER and Clads. Since there have been only a few commemoratives halves found, I did not break these classes down further.
This year two Booker T. Washington and one 1926 Sesquientennial of the American Independence SILVER commemoratives have been found. Eight 1986 Statue of Liberty (some were proofs), one 1995 Atlanta Olympics, and one Civil War clad commemorative half have been found. |

sure! very cool. i was thinking it would be interesting to see how often they make it into circulation. i posted that thought a month ago now, and as you can see, there has been very little response. i'm thinking that means either... A) there just aren't very many proofs being found besides the plentiful halves on Country's thread, or B) people haven't had the interest to report them when found. |

C) I'm willing to bet that most of us on this forum don't hand-sort enough volume to catch the subtle differences that a circulated zinc proof penny would provide. The nickel only caught my eye because of its high relief, and I was checking dates for wartime nicks.
Now what I'm curious about is if we'll find the "uncirculated" coins the mint is putting out now that have the "satin finish" (P and D mints 2005-present). I say this because the HSN coin hawkers were selling "full sets" of 2009 lincolns by breaking up these uncirculated sets.

I've found a few 2007, 2008, and 2009 clad half dollars with the Satin Finish while searching for SILVER. Others have too. |

I have a very large number of clad proof halfs. Over 100. Any idea what I can do with them? Some are in very good condition, and some show the wear of circulation. Is there a market for these? Is someone buying them? |

I found a 1976 S penny the other day. The only way to tell it was a proof was by the "S". It had certainly lost the characteristic beauty of a proof coin.

I find a lot of 1969 S pennies, but I don't think any of mine have been a proof coin, probably just the regular business strike coin for circulation. None of them had that proof look to the coin, so I just assume that they aren't proofs. Cool that you found a proof one!

Yeah at first I thought it was just a good condition 69-s because I find those all the time but I looked at it closer and compared it to another and it was quite obvious that it was a proof. |

How can so many proof half dollars be in circulation? Someone paid a premium for these; they were in cases or protective wrappers. How can so many of them be in circulation? Does the mint dump the excess into circulation, or were these defective (damaged) proofs to begin with? |

Hey, that's a possibility I never considered! They may be imperfect strike proofs! My other thought had been that when people have proof sets that they received as gifts, they are more likely to spend the halves simply because they add up faster. They need a few bucks for a pack of ciggs, so they break open that set they got from their aunt 12 years ago, and grab the half and quarter... MAYBE the dime and nickel... Also, it seems like at this site we sort pennies and halves waaaay more than anything else. It's possible that there are more impaired proof pennies sorted, but they aren't really "found" because they get thrown back by the Ryedale sorters, and if they are found by a hand sorter, they may not be noticeably different. Here's why: pennies circulate fast and often. Halves don't. So a proof penny in circulation for a year probably looks - at first glance - like a normal penny. A proof half in circulation for a year probably still looks like a proof half! So... think about how long we hand sorters actually look at a penny in order to decide if we're going to keep it or not. Some people aren't even looking at the obverse, so they wouldn't see that it has an S mint mark; they just see that it's obviously zinc and toss it. Just thinking. |

Anyone else find a proof coin this year? Anything BESIDES halves, as halves are very well tracked over on Country's thread here: You must be logged in to see this link. |

Found out from Country's half dollar tracking thread that Dumpster Diver found a 2004 Iowa 90% silver proof quarter back in February... added it to the first post. |

I bought a $100 lot of coppers from JobIII a few weeks ago. As I was sorting the lot for 1982's and Ugly Abes, I found a proof 1961 penny, somewhat circulated, but it's got some luster and definitely has the high relief that all proofs do.
Thanks for doing this thread.
