I came across this coin today while sorting through a few rolls of quarters. When I first saw the edge, I thought I scored a pre-65, but it turned out to be a South Carolina State Quarter (Philadelphia mint).

Anyone else ever come across a coin like this where the edge is all white? Any possible info? Thanks!

The mint produced 90% silver state quarters. Could be one of these got out of the corral and into the wild.

Does this quarter have an "S" mintmark?

Does the coin have the silver ring?

Nah, It has the P mintmark.

I'm unsure what you mean by "silver ring" - Are you asking if it sounds like a silver quarter when jingled? If so, then no...

OK...Not a silver quarter.

Does the edge color resemble the copper-nickel clad?

Unfortunately, i don't have a scale accurate enough to weigh that small... but using the ole' pencil and ruler method, it appears to weigh exactly the same as an average statehood clad quarter

Aww man, you have to a have a scale... You can get one on Ebay for less then $15 shipped... Fits right in your pocket.

I bought one for $9 about 2 mo ago, its invaluable.

I am under the impression that uncirculated coins may not show the 'sandwich' effect. This is evident to me while coin-roll-hunting JFK halves. There are some uncirculated rolls from the 90s that show no copper band in the middle. I believe that the copper band does not show until they are more circulated and the clad layer wears off. If the coin appears uncirculated, this may be the case. If the coin is well worn, I dunno....

I find plenty of gold plated and chromed half dollars.

I bet someone plated it.

The coins I find were often plated after wear and scratches.
