I'm sure it's been asked before, but I can't find the answer in the forum. I can't figure out the key words to search either.
Therefore, where do you sell pennies to? It would make things a lot easier for me to start this hobby with the wife if I could show a profit.
Thank You

Easy: right here. I think you need to have something like 15 posts or something to be able to post to the Buy/Sell/Trade forums.
You can comfortably sell $75 face value in "copper" for $100. That includes shipping, so your "profit" is around $13 per $75 in face value. Some times you can get $105 or $110 per $75, so that, of course, ups your profit to $18 or $23. |

Or you could sell on eBay and have all your profits eaten up by eBay and PayPal fees. Best deal would be if you could sell to someone here that you could deliver to locally and avoid the shipping costs. If you do sell some that need to be shipped, there are detailed shipping instructions in the members only section to ensure your shipment arrives safely. You would probably have to do some serious sorting to show her that you are making enough profit to justify it. Best approach might be to tell her it is a hobby that returns a slim profit, with no downside.. you always have your money. You don't need any equipment to start.. that is whole 'nother discussion with the better half after you have proven the profit potential and are going to get serious. You also need to think about obtaining cents and disposing of zinc if you play at that level. The beauty of the hobby is that you can participate at any level.. even one roll at a time.. and the pennies are still available at the bank for face value (For a limited time only.) |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |

UMMMMM ..... Would you mind explaining this comment for a newbie who enjoys going to banks with his wife and getting rolls (not boxes or bags) of pennies .... you ARE just teasing right .... right? .... RIGHT?
Does Mr. Obama have something else he plans to spring on us?

Only half teasing unfortunately.
There are those of us that think the good ol days of being able to get pennies at the bank anytime you want may be numbered. There is the possibility that the government may discontinue the cent. Some say the 2008 is the last memorial. Many banks are always looking for ways to cut back. It is getting harder for some members to get coins without the banks wanting to get fees. I was told at one of my banks today that they are now required to ship all the coins they receive out 'cause somebody gave a customer a short roll and another teller got 2 rolls of quarters full of washers. If they are ordering coins in, they are probably only going to get enough to service their merchant customers.. no extras for us collectors. I don't want to spread doom and gloom, but I think it might start to get more difficult to get pennies in the future.
Nothing wrong with going to the bank and getting a few rolls. I did that myself today. Went to a couple of banks just on impulse and picked up 400 CWR of pennies. Not bad for not having anything preordered for today.
You should always keep a few boxes stashed away for those days when you can't get to the bank, or the bank tells you they can't sell you any pennies.
