Verdigris. General unattractiveness.
Are there any other "qualities" or lack of qualities that you take into account when determining if a cent is unworthy enough to be considered an "Ugly Abe?"

| How about if the obverse is flawless but the reverse has some visible verdigris? Or vice versa. How about just a spot of verdigris and no other flaws? |

To some extent, it's subjective. |

| If it has a large amount of a foreign substance on it or its misshapen or defaced in some way. In most cases if I can see the date I put it in my general pile. However, my base standard is that if it is not fit for commerce, I consider it an "ugly Abe." |

I don't care, copper is copper I keep them in the same hoard.
"ugle Abe", something that makes touching the penny uncomfortable. Or, major dings, one or two is fine with me. Or, bent, of course to any extent. Or, scratched up, one little scratch who cares :) |

Yes, I separate and roll them. They will be the first ones into the furnace when the melt ban is lifted. Also if I ever sell some of my general stash, I want to be able to make some representations as to condition. I also separate and roll AUs/BUs and Canadian coppers. |

That's right. Copper is copper. But, you don't actually keep severely gunked up and green, corroded copper cents in the same containers with your nicer quality, AU/BU copper cents, do you? |

I agree with your summation here. How much scrutiny do you place on each individual cent? |

Yes, I've read good things about verdi-gone. I may have to try it sometime. |

Same here. If they have the slightest hint of green corrosion (verdigris), they go in with the "ugly Abes." |

Does anyone else hammer their bent coins flat? I have a pig flat piece of steel and a hammer on the hoarding work bench....flatten the bent Abe out.
The coins that are stuck together....i put in a bucket of water and let them soak....about 75% will disolve apart. The rest i pull apart with a knife and clean up with mineral spirits.
If they are really funky....they go into the trash. |
