As a firearm owner myself, I believe (and cops have echoed this view to me) that anyone who is legally allowed and wants to carry a firearm for personal protection should do so, especially in these uncertain times--make criminals nervous enough that they'll get a real job instead of getting shot by a would-be victim. But for people who live in gun-unfriendly areas (for example, Illinois and Wisconsin, currently the only two states in the U.S. that don't issue firearm permits for personal carry--see You must be logged in to see this link. for more info), this post on SurvivalBlog offers other possibilities:

From the blog:

"Your mind is your primary self-defense weapon."

That's true, your mind and your eyes are important. If you believe you *can* defend yourself, it makes a big difference. It makes you more confident and this carries through in your strikes.

As for the eyes, never underestimate the power of looking someone in the eye, especially if you're a woman. Think about it -- how often in our society does someone make prolonged eye contact? Only during intense moments, really. It can be unsettling enough in a bad situation that your attacker will think twice about coming after you. He might decide to walk away, but even if he doesn't, you've unsettled him, and that will give you an advantage.

Plus, if you look someone in the eyes, you can still see their entire body, so you can counter any move they make. It does no good to watch the hand where their weapon is, or look at the part of the body they might use against you, because they could fake you out and you'll miss their follow up move.

IMO, even a small person can defend himself just using his body. Every part of the body is a weapon if you know where and how to hit -- your feet, knees, legs, hands, fingers, elbows, eyes and mind.

A nice metal ball point pen is good to keep in your pocket. It will make a good shiv in an emergency. And most people would never think to take it away from you. You can even run it through a metal detector and put it back in your pocket at 99% of places.

I would like to say for anyone really on defence.... Get in a fight. Not a wrestling match, a real fist swinging fight of somekind. Local martial arts if you want to. Explain to them you don't want training, you want to experiance what it is like to be attacked.

If you have never been in a fight you don't know how you will react, and when someone is raining down hard blows upon your head, or you are on your hands and knees being kicked, that ain't the time to be finding out.

As for non-firearm defence, those of you who were at the get together know, I carry a collapsable steel baton... err... I mean multi sized mandrel for my jewelry making... ya that's it.... at all times.

Seriously, A real friend will attack you if you ask, lol.

I am sure they could harass me under the right circumstances.

But I have never had a problem, and it is clearly visible sticking from my back pocket so it is not concealed.

I honestly do not know, I never thought to ask if I could carry it, like my knives.

Who cares about the law, I'd rather be judge by 12 than to be carried by 6......read it somewhere and I love it.

Same here...love that saying. I don't get how my state (Wisconsin) can make it illegal to carry a concealed weapon. Doesn't that go against the constitutional right to bear arms?

It may be illegal in WI for a concealed weapon but WI is an open carry state. Go figure, you can't hide it, but you can strap on and carry in the open.

What I carry in my car and handy at home is a can of carburator cleaner........I started doing this after, by accident, it went into my eyes, pointing the nozzle the wrong way, I was unable to see for one hour, and that was after flushing out my eyes with water.

Be sure to use superglue to make sure that the tip won't come off.

I did use it one time against someone and it works great.

Awesome idea, I was going to bring up pepper spray in addition to a bludgeon, I do not carry it, but should.

The only people who can't legaly carry a gun in Wisconsin and Illinois are law-abiding citizens. Criminals don't care. How about a small claw hammer, or something else of that nature? Not a weapon, just a simple tool. I think some motorcycle gangs carry hammers just for that reason. Even felons can possess a hammer....

Ponce 'ole pal, we are actually in agreement on this topic, hehe. To hell with the laws if you live there.

Deal

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

Kurr? in many places is against the law to carry pepper spray but not a can of carbutator cleaner.

Deal? everytime that that we "break" the law what we are actually doing is making new ones..... after all the law is for the people and not for the cops or judges.

How big is a can of carburetor cleaner, Ponce? That's a new one for me.

Hee hee hee. Yes, it might be a little bulky to carry, but that is some nasty stuff. You should always keep a pack of matches along with it.. just in case you REALLY need to get your point across!

Nick? just a regular can of carburator cleaner, there is only one size.

And yes Jack, playing around I have used it as a flame thrower ......... actually practicing for when the zombies come out of hiding.

I have a "friend" who used to go around the city and he would shoot a stream of the carburator cleaner at the cops cars.........the paint would come off.
