I saw this article linked on Coinflation and think it's relevant here. How would (or last year, how did) our behavior change if fuel prices skyrocket, whether because of limited supply, dollar hyperinflation, etc.? What would we do differently and what behaviors, attitudes and focuses would we need to seriously adjust if energy costs became prohibitive according to our current economic scale?

Or maybe consider the flip side of the coin: What can we learn from groups like the Amish who for centuries haven't had to worry about relying on modern energy sources to survive and go on with life?

This is probably the hardest thing for me to adapt to. I've never concerned myself with designer clothes tags, a big fancy house, or alot of lifes "status" items. But, I am absolutely addicted to dumping gas and hauling ass! Neck-snappin acceleration and that V8 growl are a way of life for me. It is my main hobby and source of excitement.

On top of that, I use my 3/4 ton truck regularly on side jobs, and it too gets around 9-13 MPG depending on the load. I've had a few motorcycles and absolutely loved them too. However, without health insurance right now, I don't think that is a smart avenue to approach even if one can get 40-60 MPG and not give up a thing in performance.

I have often wondered this myself Nickelless, and I have to say I don't know if it will ever be possible for me to give all that up. It's been around in my life since I was born. I am very conservrative in most all of lifes ways, except this. Hmm, something to think on at work today. -Mike

When gas hit north of $3 a gallon I started driving more gently. There are three key changes that I've made permanent:

1. Preservation of momentum (looking far ahead for lights, anticipating the flow of traffic, etc. You can roll a long ways without applying the gas before you've dropped even 3mph.)

2. Conscious use of gravity, to build or decrease speed.

3. Slower driving speed (for example, 62-65 in a 70mph zone)

Now, if I don't leave town to visit family, I only fill up the car once a month but still drive it all the time.

If gas goes above $4 again I'll do more errands/commuting on the bike.

What Ponce said.

I will only drive on downhill roads...
