I was at my local coin shop today where I buy most of my silver bars and rounds and the dealer was using his coin counter to count out $50 face value bags of wheat pennies. (1909-1958) He was selling them for $175 each. About a year ago he used to sell them for $150 a bag, I don't know if the price increase is because copper went up, or the collector value went up, or is just random.
I started talking to him about wheat pennies and told him my wife collects them, and he said he could come down to $156 because I am a regular customer. That's a little over 3 cents per coin.
I went ahead and bought a bag even though I could have had three times the copper for the same price by sorting boxes of cents. I figured it was a way to combine a present for my wife with aquiring some more copper. We got a bag a long time ago and it was fun going through them, she filled up a lot of spaces in her coin albums, and the rest are in a huge (almost waist high) jar she has for wheaties. I think it will take at least one more bag to fill her jar, so I will probably pick up another at some point just because it would be cool to see that jar full.

Nice buy, its time to look for cherries. Ever been to this site? He's a member of the coin forum I frequent. Hands down the best resource for date/mm varieties. You must be logged in to see this link.
This guy goes through lots of cents looking for the good stuff. Not only a variety searcher but a good artist also. Has does prints of all the great engravers.
No joke here, I will buy your errors. |

We will. My wife and I will go through them one by one and look for anything interesting. She is the wheatie collector, and I bought them for her so I have to wait till she gets home, but I sort of cheated. I grabbed a handfull just to see what I could find and I was surprised. Nothing amazing, but I was expecting pennies from mostly the 40's and 50's. In that handful there were actually quite a few teens and twenties, and plenty of S mint marks. I will let you know if we find anything really good.

Thanks for the link by the way, that is an intersting site. I am going to go look through it in more depth now.

If you happen to sort by date then you are in a good position to review each date on the coppercoins site in a simple manner. I used to use a bing lazy suzy table with pill bottles lined up and dated. did that for years. then one day I saw the the 31-s is a tough key date, So I pulled the 31 bin and sure enough- Ka,,ching times nine.
