ever since i have been actively hording pennies and nickels in the last few months, i've grown to count things in terms of the money i can potentially "make" out of each rolls of pennies or nickels i go through

i have gone through about 900 dollars worth of nickels(450 rolls) and 250 dollars worth of pennies(500 rolls), of which about 180 dollars worth of nickels are saved for their 100% nickel content, and about 100 dollars worth of pennies are saved for their 98% copper content

so, roughly i "make" about 40 cents for each roll of nickels i go through, or 20 cents for each roll of pennies i go through

the problem for me is that whenever i have to spend money, i am counting how many rolls of pennies or nickels i have to go through in order to make enough money to pay off that bill

if i have to buy a bag of chips for a dollar, i have to go though about 5 rolls of pennies or 2-3 rolls of nickels; and i've found myself increasingly unwilling to spend money in general; almost no cinema movies for me, as i can download; no more music from store unless they are the bands i really like and support(Radiohead), cause i can download; i have allergy, i used to take Claritin, they are good with minimal side effects, they cost 20 dollars for 12 pills, i switched to a generic band which i acquire 36 pills for 10 dollars, a bit more side effects, but i feel better knowing they are not as expensive

i think it would be really wrong if i earn a good salary and still do the above

teach your kids to sort pennies, and they will not spend your money like crazy

I don't think what you are doing is "wrong". Except perhaps the medicine thing if the side -effects are bad and could harm your health.

I too think twice about buying things if I consider how many nickels, pennies or silver it would take to buy them. Many people who come to America or Canada from third world nations will live poorer than they have too so they can get ahead in life. They often arrive with next to nothing spending their life's savings just to get here. If they can buy a little store or gas station they often will live in the back of it. But they are able to get ahead doing so. The poor who were born here just don't seem to be able to do that. When they earn a dollar they will often go into debt for two more.

I really admire young people who are able to control their spending habits. Sure one has to have a balance in life. But our society makes it easy to go over board on spending and not saving.

There is nothing wrong with you ballcopper. What you have found is one of the easiest ways to become wealthy. My grandpa told me that if you don't spend money the first half of your life you won't have a money problem in the second. I have lived by that rule and now that I'm there I find he was correct.

One of my biggest pet peeves is hearing people complain they have no money, yet they spent it on the most worthless things. It's like they have to spent it as soon as possible.

I went on a total saving kick two decades ago for one year. Only bought what I absolutely needed. Proper diet, phone, car insurance, and I cut back on electric, water, gas, vices, and evenings out. I became a hermit that read alot about everything. I saved over 6k. Then I put that into my mortgage. That took four years off my payments. For a total of 20k. Guess what I've been doing for the past fifteen or so years? If you guessed the same saving plan you would be close.

It's a tough ride in the start, but the finish is great. Enjoy the ride.
